Conversion failed. The transcoder failed to start up

I tried reinstalling the entire server (on Version 1.20.3.3437) That didn’t work
Then I tried rolling back to 1.20.2, that still hasn’t worked.
Tried changing the transcode temp folder, that hasn’t worked.

Im out of ideas, this update seems to have well and truly broken my server!

Just go back to Version 1.20.1.3252 that fixed my problems😁

Mapping a drive instead of using a UNC path does get around the issue.

Confirming that mapping a drive instead of using a UNC path got around the issue.

In my case It seemed to affect only some external .sub files with non alpha-numeric chars in the name (like: ! , '),they were also long ones. Rebuilding the library with x:\ instead of UNC paths seems to have done the trick.
Another possibility, on previous windows versions I hit upon a coding file:open limitation on occasions, that said any files (incl path) must be under 128 (?) chars from start to end. Wondering if the UNC path extra chars were just enough push to go over the char limit on select subs (don’t know if this is current, but who knows where a bit of legacy code can surface ).

For reference library is stored on a Linux NAS, with plex running on a windows 10 computer. Transcode directory is set on a ramdisk.

Same issue here. Everything worked up to Version 1.20.0, but for me problems started with 1.20.2. Playback works for files added before the update, but not after update. Please fix this!

I’ve just realised I have a bigger issue. My Western digital external HD’s are failing!

I’ve hosted the same file locally on my Mac and playback is fine.

So, after I replaced the UNC path with a mapped drive letter in the Library folder, all the subtitles that was there before, now are shown as “none”.

If I create a new Library with the same mapped drive letter folder, the external subtitles are detected. But that means losing all the watched flags and any meta data modifications I have made…

Doing the Plex Dance with the old Library does not help. When the movie is added back, after scan and bundles cleaning, there are still no subs detected.

I’ve tried editing the Library, and under Advanced, I’ve set the agent to Plex Movie. After that I have disabled “Use local assets”, moved the srt files out, scanned, enabeled “Use local assets” again, scanned, moved the srt files back, scanned. Still no subs detected.

Any other suggestions…? :disappointed_relieved:

Confirm this option works. Download from [https://www.filehorse.com/download-plex-media-server/54150/download/], choose Plex Media Server 1.20.1.3252 and download, then uninstall media server and install this older version. Then all you have to do is choose the libraries which contain tv programs, movies, one by one, and ‘Refresh all metadata’. Do not update to new version and stop the autoupdate under ‘Settings’, ‘General’ , ‘server version updates’ until this is resolved.

Great  now we just wait til they fix the issu

Refresh all metadata is a needed step to clear out references to the UNC path. In my case I had only small libraries with almost everything watched so I could do the refresh with no issues.

In your case I’d stay on 1.20.1.3252 version as https://forums.plex.tv/u/miguelito186 did

Thank you all, but just rolling back to 3252 made no difference. Still no subtitles detected.
What I discovered, though, was that when I switched the “Agent” from Plex Movie (Legacy) to Plex Movie, it works!

Agent

With the newer(?) Agent, refreshing the metadata brings back the subtitels. Yey!

I must admit that I have not read up on these Agents… My Libraries has been around for a long time, I guess that is why they were on the Legacy agent?

However, if rolling back the server version to 3252 until the UNC issue gets fixed, there is no real need to switch to mapped drive letters, is there? Because then there would be no issues with the subtitels in the first place?
Or, if moving to mapped drive letters, there is no need to stay on an older version, because subtitles work when on mapped drives?

Or, is this agent issue I had the only problem? Does even UNC paths work in the latest release, just as long as you have the newer Agent? I have not had time to test that…

Also, refreshing metadata does luckily not affect the watched flag. And if you have made your own changes to metadata you should lock the data to prevent it from being overwritten. Some of my posters changed upon metadata refresh, though.
Lock

My first attempts where I created a new Library did of course affect the watched flag and lost any custom metadata…

BTW, there is (probably?) no need to download earlier server versions, as they all seem to exist in the “Updates” folder in the AppData of Plex Media Server. It can be found in C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Plex Media Server
(or elsewhere, if you have moved it: https://forums.plex.tv/t/howto-an-extended-guide-on-how-to-move-the-plex-data-folder-on-windows )

Update to Version 1.20.4.3517 fixt it for me

HI, there still going strong on a old version, is this problem already fixed?

I’m still having the issue. I’m on version 1.22.0.4163.
Anybody knows if Plex should have fixed this?
