"Conversion failed. The transcoder failed to start up."

Server Version#: 1.24.2.4973-2b1b51db9
Player Version#:

I recently installed the latest build of PMS, using a 14TB Seagate CMR drive on a USB connection in an external chassis. For the initial setup, I created four directories, including a Movies directory, a Music directory, a TV series directory and a “Concert” directory of the Movie type. Initially, everything was working and the content in all directories seem to run on the web/laptop instance of Plex. Approximately 24 hours after installation, I attempted to play a concert file and received the message “Conversion failed. The transcoder failed to start up.” This was odd, as the concert was an MKV containing MPEG2 plus original audio stream. I then noticed that none of the concerts in the Concert folder would run. All of these were in MKV format with either MPEG2 or H.264 compressed video streams and passthrough audio streams in a variety of formats (AC3, 5.1 and 5.1 HD). Strangely, the videos in my Movie directory and TV series directly continued to run fine, though they were also in the MKV container format. I’ve tried a number of the supposed fixes online, including deleting and restoring the “codecs” directory and refreshing metadata. I’ve also rebooted the system and restarted PMS. Any ideas on getting this working again? Thanks!

Actually suddenly I am having a problem with the “Transcoder failed to start up”. I have my Plex server in a Qnap NAS. For years i am using the Apple TV app with no problems but now I get this error. The strange thing is that for the first time Plex on Apple TV doesn’t play and the Plex on Xiaomi mi box does.

I’m having the same difficulty. But only with MOVIES (so far). When I click on any title, the notification shows a different title, then the error appears. I’m using PLEX on a Dell laptop running Ubuntu Linux 20.04 LTS. Everything was fine until two days ago.

That’s interesting. And were these in the .MKV format as well, or another?

Well, I did find a solution. It involved uninstalling PMS, deleting the Plex Media Server directory in the c:/users/appdata/local folder, running a decent registry cleaner, rebooting and reinstalling PMS. I still don’t know the underlying problem, and I hope that I don’t have to repeat those steps every couple of days.

I wasn’t home so I couldn’t check the solution above.

So, I saw that there was an update so i manually update the plex server, since I am running it on a qnap nas, but the problem continue to exists.

I tried to access the logs on the console, and i select to view only the errors, and saw that in one of the movies that wasn’t playing, was saying “The file is missing”. Obviously the file was there.
My problems starts when I download the 4 last movies. The first 3 was animated, and the 4th in a raw that i was download last was a movie. I move the first 3 animated to my animated folder, and the server obviously run the metadata etc etc. Since this move of the 3 movies to a different folder, everything is working, even the 4th movie which was saying that the file is missing.

I still don’t know what happened…

Same here, movies play just fine on mi box. On LG tv I get the same error
