Conversion Failed. Transcoder crashed or failed to start up. Plex version 1.9.7.4460

Plex server “Payed for life” version 1.9.7.4460 running on Windows 10 64 bit 1803 build 17134.165
i5 2.5 ghz laptop, 12 gigs ram, 265 gb ssd
Media stores on Seagate blackarmour NAS 4 x 4tB HDDs no raid to increase speed.
Have been using plex for 2 to 3 years no problems until now.

For the last month now i’m getting this annoying error “Conversion Failed. Transcoder crashed or failed to start up” when playing back media. Does not matter if is on samsung phone or android tv box. It happens on random media. I have read forums about this and most people refer to corrupted plex library and to delete media library affected and recreate. I have done that and still go the error. I then deleted the complete plex storage folder under “c:\users%Username%\APPDATA\Local\Plex Media Server” and then created all libraries again and what do you know i still get the error. Some people also refer to downgrade to older versions but it seems like they removed the option on the site to download previous versions. Please help our life is plex and now it does not work most of the time. I tried to look at the logs but i can not make sense of what is going on. please help.

That’s a pretty old version of the server and might not work well with the latest client/player software.

Current version available for Windows:

Windows 7 SP1 or newer
1.13.5.5291-6fa5e50a8

You can manually download and install the latest version from here:

Hi. Thanks for the assistance. I will download the update manually as my plex says it is up to date on 1.9.7.4460.

I found the problem causing the conversion failed error in this thread. Conversion failed. transcoder crashed or failed to start up . The cause was a missing windows 10 update fix for a faulty update. Since I installed this update i had no more errors on Plex.

Just a pity i had to delete my plex library and loose al my metadata and already watched shows history and that was not the fix.
