Conversion failed. The transcoder crashed or failed to start up. With new updates getting this

With the last few plex pass updates I’ve been getting the error “Conversion failed. The transcoder crashed or failed to start up.” Sometimes its 20 seconds in, sometimes 30 minutes in, sometimes not at all. Happens on plexweb, roku, amazon fire etc. I’ve tried to notice trends but I really can’t seem to narrow it down. Sometimes it will happen once early on and then 2 hours into a movie is hasn’t happened again. Seems to mostly be happening with .mkv from what I can tell.

My server is on Windows 7. Here’s a recent example from the logs but they all look the same. Any help would be appreciated. Haven’t seen this before in my last 4 years using this.

No one else?

I have recently started to receive this very same error. only happens when watching a show with subtitles on videos play fine when subs are off also running on win 10 and streaming on Tizen

I have started seeing this as well. I found specifically going from 1.5.X to 1.7.X or later causes this for significant numbers of my MKVs.

Here is a sample that works before 1.5.X but fails for anything 1.7.X and later (26MB) https://1drv.ms/u/s!Al8MC7G-ByoCnKMScu7YHwc25namdQ

Thanks for the reply mcmalach. It happens with or without them for me. I appreciate the suggestion though.

Lenaxia, thanks for posting that. There may be something to that. I went from 1.5.5.3634 that I got in May to 1.7.5.4035 that I got in July. Then updated 3 times since. Ever since the July update I’ve had some level of this issue. Didn’t have a chance to really watch much in July so thought when it happened it was a fluke. Really started noticing it regularly in August.

I guess I’ll just assume Plex employees don’t come here anymore. Anyone else out there found a solution?

Bump. Can someone from Plex address this? I see you guys commenting or at least acknowledging all kinds of other stuff.

I am not able to reproduce your problem with your sample. It plays Ok on my side using PlexWeb, with or without subs.

@Fawkee Unless you post video samples and tell us how to reproduce the problem it’s virtually impossible to help you.

I would also recommend to post it in the windows PMS forum since this is where your problem lies. You could also call out for @sa2000 who seems to be one of the Windows PMS experts if I am not mistaken.

But you could also insult the whole team in other threads and hope this improves your situation. Your call.

@Coxeroni double posting is not welcome in this forum (see Community Guidelines). We can move posts to other forums if needed. But thanks for your suggestion, although at this stage it may not be necessary to request the help of @sa2000 yet

Sorry I meant to post it in the Windows section in the first place.

There is no way to reproduce it. As stated multiple places it is completely random. Sometimes 10 seconds in, sometime 10 mins, 20 mins 30 mins, sometimes not at all.

and coxeroni, we went weeks without a single reply. Not sure how the situation gets worse than that.

The next time this happens. Please note the time. Then provide us the full set of logs from PMS and from the client you are using. And of course let us know what time this occurred so we know where to focus on the logs.

I also start seeing this error, but only on two movies. What should I do? I am new with it… Please help

I’m getting this error on my Lubuntu VM that only runs Plex. I stopped getting the error for about 2 weeks and now its back. Version 1.9.5.4339

@sinroz Please provide the info requested by @“MovieFan.Plex” before it’s too late and the necessary info rolls out the logs.

I don’t have any problems with video, but Plex won’t play any of my music. Doesn’t matter if it’s the Android app, Fire Stick, Windows. Message says “Conversion Failed. The transcoder crashed or failed to start up”
