Copying files to migrate plex to new server

Server Version#:1.14.1.5488
Player Version#:

I am using LInux MINT 19.1

I want to migrate Plex to a new computer using the same Linux MINT.

I was able to find the PLEX files under /var/lib/ etc…

I tried to zip and tar.gr, and I tried copying the files to an external HD. But, each time, I get the same permissions error.

As stated in the instructions page, the files are owned by plex:plex.

Thanks for any advice on how to accomplish this.

have you tried copying w/ sudo?

I am using the GUI. I am still working on learning more CLI.

Is there a GUI way to use sudo?

Thanks

In short? no.

Linux is a command line based OS.

I think you’ll find my “Backup / restore” tip of use.

“Backup” from old.
"Restore on the new one.

It is effectively cloning.
It takes the UID/GID changes into consideration

So, there is no way to these copy files off that I can see what I open up a folder under Linux MINT on my linux desktop computer?

Linux might be a CLI system, but there seems to be a GUI that people use. A simple copy command should be executable form a GUI. Unfortunate that it is not.

You can either try with the gui, or do it right the first time. The choice is yours. I’ve been at this a long long time.

Since your question also involves putting your Plex metadata on an external HD,
you have the burden of additional steps; none of which can be done in a gui.

In this scenario,

  1. Using EXT or NTFS drives (internal or external) on Linux

  2. Moving PMS 'Library'
