Correct TV show metadata fields for personal media?

I have videos that are appropriate to manage as if they are TV shows: the videos should be grouped into a topic (show) and the videos within a topic are in a specific order (episodes). I do not need multiple seasons within a show.

From the official support docs, my understanding is I should be able to:

  1. Use standard tools like Subler to embed show and episode information in the files
  2. Create a new library for TV shows
  3. Adjust the library’s agent to Personal Media Shows
  4. Copy the files to the underlying storage like I usually do: one folder for each show with all the files in it.

…and if I do those things, I will get a library that looks the way I want.

I’ve tried a few different metadata combinations. The library always shows as empty. If I put the same files in an Other Videos library, the files appear and are playable. The problem with that option is the Roku Plex app does not offer a folder view, so you get a very long list to scroll through. The TV view is much better.

I cannot find a document that says which metadata attributes are used by the Local Media Assets (TV) agent to read show and episode information. Is that schema available?

With Personal Media Shows you’ll still need to name your files according to the tv-show naming schema.

example:

Top Level Folder   <- the folder linked to that library
  Topic
    Season 01
      Topic - s01e01.mp4
      Topic - s01e02.mp4
      ...
      Topic - s01eXX.mp4

Thank you @tom80H. I had seen that in the docs but I skipped it because I didn’t always do it with the “real” TV shows I have in the library and they worked anyway. Following the folder structure is triggering recognition of the files into shows. It seemed like once even a single show folder had proper structure, the server started trying to recognize the others too.

It looks like to display a proper title for each episode, that has to be set in the file’s metadata in the attribute MetaZ called title and Subler calls name. Simply naming the files Show - s01e01 - Episode Title.mp4 isn’t causing episode titles to appear.
