Could Plex for Windows be published in the Microsoft Store?

Congrats on the release of your new player, it caught me by surprise!

Can you give consideration to publishing it in the Microsoft Store? There’s a much larger variety of software there now, instead of the old days when it was just UWP stuff. Filebot is a great example of a program available there that is a simple old-school Windows program.

I know, blah blah blah, Windows Store is dead, etc. But honestly, it’s a centralized source and it just makes it easier to make sure I get updates automatically since I run it irregularly.

Yup that would be good to see, as the store apps get updated automatically so i much rather prefer to use store apps as I dont have to worry about updating my apps. Looks like it’s pretty easy to do as well:

Thanks!

That’s a good point about it being a centralized source for receiving updates. Same is true for the Apple App Store.

No immediate plans to but no long term plans not to. It’d be helpful to gauge user interest. That wizard makes it look easy but I have no faith it’s a couple clicks and done.

Hah, I don’t blame you! I’ve never gone through the process. Just out of curiosity, hey @filebot, how hard was the process to convert your program into use in the Microsoft Store? That’s where I bought it a while back!

A Microsoft Store option would be welcomed here.

My main job is converting random Windows apps to App-V format for enterprise deployment, and I’m currently kicking the tyres of Microsoft’s new MSIX format (the new format for the Store which replaces AppX and eventually also App-V). I can try and convert it tomorrow as a test!

Ideally though you’d automate the process as part of your build pipeline, and there’s many options for that. I know the guy in charge of MSIX over at Microsoft, I’ll ping him a link to this thread. I’m sure they’d be happy to offer guidance if it means not losing one of the main apps in their store, it’d be a big win for them.

Making a Microsoft Store package is easier than making a MSI / NSIS installer:

I would also like to express my interest in this. I hate app updates the old windows way. Everything should update the chrome way or through the store.

There are win32 programs in the MS store from single developers, so it should be pretty easy. I agree this would be a huge win.

I also support putting the new Plex app in the Windows Store.

that’s odd, i just went to install this on a friends pc and searched for plex in the store and its no longer there…Ive been using it for ages from the store but its vanished, then i find this thread…whats going on? Ive got it installed from the store on my pc and it still works so bit confused

Id also support this aswell!

You should put it there because it makes sense to do so (which it does), not because you’re making us beg for it

You should absolutely consider deploying the new app to the Windows Store. I would even suggest to do this near- to middle-term instead of “not saying no in the long-term”.

Listing the app in the store makes discovering and updating/installing the app much easier and more reliable for you and us users. You do not need to rely on self-written update routines and workflows in such an app, which often bring along strange necessities such as essentially installing the whole application in an AppData folder.

Other apps such as Spotify also went this way and even supported a seamless transition from regular install to Windows Store install.

Yes please

I definitely co-sign on this. Went to use Plex today and had to open it, close it, and open it again just to ensure any updates were downloaded.

I would also like to see this happening. This would ease things up by a great length

I agree, It would be great to have plex in the store!
Are there any news?

A +1 from me as well…

In my opinion, the current update process in Plex for Windows is absolutely horrible: Launch the app, wait an unspecified amount of time for a background download, close the app, relaunch the app and hopefully receive the notification to install what might have been downloaded.

Vs Plex Media Player: Launch the app, receive notification that an update is available, click yes to download and install.
