Couple of Questions About DVR & Apple TV

With the great work being made on Plex DVR & Live TV I had a couple of question:

  1. Is Plex DVR on Apple TV a planned future feature, being able to start and stop recordings through the Apple TV app and of course force the recording to your Plex Media server rather than local Apple TV Storage ? Is so is this a near future, distant or not even been planned ?

  2. Are there planned features (or in fact workarounds) for commercial skipping in the DVR piece of Plex ? I currently run multiple Plex Media Servers on Mac and QNAP NAS boxes.

Thanks as always

  1. Have you read the new blog post?
  2. There are people that are using comskip with the post processing script feature, but I have not done anything with it. Basically Plex gives you the ability to post process a file, you can use comskip to mark the commercials and another application to actually remove them from the file. Someone with more info will chime in I’m sure though.

@adamskoog Hi there, thanks for the reply. Yes I did read the latest blog post but although I see Live TV now on Apple TV I don’t see features yet to control the DVR and recording of channels through Plex on Apple TV, that is what I was referencing, if that is coming. If I missed something in the post that speaks to those features please do feel free to point me in the right direction. Thanks again

Oh, I guess I assumed that it would have both since the iOS app did. I don’t have an AppleTV to verify, but I believe I’ve seen it mentioned by others now that the dvr part isn’t there.

LiveTV addition to AppleTV is great but it needs to work as Channels app, switching channels should be instant and not seconds of waiting…

@adamskoog unfortunately no DVR functionality (ability to record from the Apple TV app) for recording yet that is why I’m hoping we can get an update on if/when that will come to the ATV version.

This…a thousand time! I have the Channels app on my Apple TV and it’s a wonderful experience. Great UI with a REAL guide, proper AppleTV remote functionality for RW/FF and, most importantly, near instant viewing after a channel is selected.

Even if there is a delay, as with Plex’s current implementation, I feel that a proper guide experience would make it somewhat acceptable. I want a guide in a grid format and be able to view it while watching live channels so I don’t have to stop the feed while looking at what else is on. Or at the very least require only 2 button presses to get to another channel (1 press to back out, scroll through guide, then 1 press to view the selection).

In the meantime, Channels app is light years ahead of Plex in terms of live TV viewing. I’m not getting rid of Plex anytime soon but it’s nowhere near my go-to app for live TV.

I just got rid of Plex because of so many missing basic functions and no info on when in future they are implemented. For example channel scan in Finland only finds a fraction of free view channels.
