Internet-based media streaming was supposed to be the panacea for the consumer, but the reality is that by making content available only within walled garden native apps, the networks can circumvent client-side DVR functionality.
Streaming apps like ABC on the Apple TV work great, except it is impossible to skip commericials. If the Plex application (I run it on Linux) could access and control an Apple TV for the purpose of recording shows to disk for later DVR access, that would make Plex a key component of my home media platform, rather than an ancillary component that I use only for occasional home movie and photo viewing.
This is the missing Plex killer app capability, please review and discuss!
