Crashing on DS218+, only plex crashes (synology doesn't crash, just plex)

been happening for the past few weeks, never used to have any issues with crashes

Server Version#: DSM Version: 6.2.4-25556 Update 6
Player Version#: PMS 1.29.0.6219
Plex Media Server Logs_2022-09-25_00-53-28.zip (3.7 MB)

I see it crash in your logs.

How much memory do you have installed in it?

Just the default stuff that came with the 218+ - 2048 MB

Again never had any issues with crashes in the past until the past week. Same users using the server as the past few years.

I have 18TB storage with 7.5TB free btw @ChuckPa

@k12g3

Would you please get me a screenshot of what filestation shows for File Sizes when you navigate into PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server/Plug-in Support/Databases ?

this what you need?

Yes. That looks fine. I was concerned about major DB damage but those look ok.

As you think back about when it crashed, is there any hint of something common?

Playing a video?
Ingesting new media?

anything?

Just normal usage. Maybe a few people connected remotely but nothing out of the ordinary. @ChuckPa

Newest set of logs after the most recent crash
Plex Media Server Logs_2022-09-26_20-29-30.zip (4.1 MB)

Thank you for the logs.

I’m not seeing ANY indication of the cause.

I would like you to turn on additional logging in the server

If this doesn’t reveal anything then I’m willing to work with you to perform some database repairs. I’ve done this on a few Synology systems , one which would crash daily, and it stopped the crashing

As first step

  1. Stop Plex

  2. In Package Center, search for and install “Text Editor” if not already installed.
    ( It’s Synology’s text editor for DSM and is really nice )

  3. Open FileStation,
    Navigate through Plex / Library / Application Support / Plex Media Server

  4. Right-click Preferences.xmlOpen with Text Editor

  5. You’ll see the preferences file open. It will only have a couple lines in it. The last line will be really long. (that’s normal)

  6. Go to the last line, cursor right to right before the />

  7. Insert a space and then type LogMemoryUse="1"

  8. It will look like this when done

SomeOtherSetting="value"  LogMemoryUse="1" />
  1. Save the file

  2. Start PMS

  3. Wait for it to crash

AS AN ALTERNATIVE –

If you’d rather just jump to the DB repair, I’m willing to do so.
Please let me know your thoughts.

Thank you, i am willing to jump to the DB repair unless you think the additional logging will reveal an easier fix

How familiar are you with working at the SSH command line prompt of the Synology?

If you aren’t familiar or aren’t confident, then we can make arrangements for me to remote desktop (I prefer using Teamviewer) to come into your machine with you there and we work through it together.

By doing it this way, I have no need to know any of your usernames/passwords (better for both of us)

Let me know when we can make arrangements to do this.

Havent done it before but confident i could give it a go. Thanks!

If you’d like, I’ll help you via teamviewer. It doesn’t take long

@ChuckPa Sure i would be willing - my apologies as i havent had time until today to work on it. let me know, thank you!

I have a DS1819+ and am now also having this issue of server crashing randomly and I have to restart it. It runs fine for a while and then when I go look, it is not running anymore. It works fine while running. This started happening in the last few weeks that I am aware. My database files as per the post above are max 1.48GB.

Running:
DSM 7.1-42661 Update 4
Plex Version 1.29.1.6276

@k12g3

Sorry for the delay. I wasn’t notified.

Let me know when to continue

@audiophile

Next time it stops, after you restart it, wait 3 minutes then download the logs ZIP file from PMS and attach it here please.

@audiophile

thank you for that but, because you turned off DEBUG logging (which is on by default), I can’t see what failed.

There is no increased storage use by having DEBUG enabled. Logs are fixed at 5 rollovers of 10 MB each.

Would you please enable DEBUG again, SAVE, and capture again at the next failure?

Will do. Thank you.

It has yet to crash while I’m actively on Plex. I haven’t been able to catch it crashing but it happens at least once a day.
