My first post and I could not see a better place to put this after poking around so if the should be moved, let me know.
Tested Plex many years ago and went with Jriver. Since release 29 it has become unusable. My goal is to point Plex at my various music libraries from iTunes, to ripped CDs, to high res files I have purchased. From there I want to create playlists I can encode as FLAC to save space (and the car only plays a limited number of formats anyway) and export them to USBs to listen to in the car. Is this a reasonable thing to try?
Thank you.
I can maybe give some insight. I use both Plex + PlexAmp and JRiver. Similar to you, I also have Hi Res files that I manage using USB drives (2TB) for my car (my car plays them).
I store the raw albums on my NAS and then use Plex for Apple TV and iOS.
PlexAmp allows me to sync hi res files to my iPhone which my car also can play using CarPlay. For music that I don’t sync it will stream the files and automatically transcode on the fly! Way cool!
The PlexAmp CarPlay with downloads has some UX shortcomings but it does work. The big advantage is that I don’t have to use JRiver and manage my USB drives anymore (in theory). A big time savings, streamlining my process because my music always goes to Plex for Apple TV purposes anyway.
The syncing with PlexAmp to the Plex server works great! So I’m trying to stay the course with PlexAmp and have put JRiver on the shelf for the moment.
But…, ihere’s the trade off, the PlexAmp experience with downloads on CarPlay has a lot to be desired, the PlexAmp team say there will be more advances there. Fingers crossed.
It’s interesting to hear that JRiver 29 is unstable, generally my impression is that JRiver is very solid relative to Plex, but Plex does way more interesting things like Apple TV support and PlexAmp CarPlay app. Happy to discuss more about my experiences and yours on this
Thanks so much for the reply. I would like to talk more about this. I am not sure that I want to have to upload to some cloud based server though. A lot of systems seem to want this.
In an ideal world I would like to:
Point some software to a few local directories and have it index/catalog them with out making additional copies.
Provide facilities where I could create and name custom playlists of this music.
Convert the files to a common format FLAC would be my preference to anything else.
Copy the result to my USB drives, or my iPhone where there is an app that I could copy the files to. I was on the path to this with Vox, but it was too limited.
Is there a way we an IM with this forum of exchange contact info?
