Creating custom library not adding all files

Server Version#: 1.15.4.994
Player Version#:

I have created a custom library where I add the root folder of a TV Show to attempt to add all the seasons of said show. In the TV Shows section the correct number of seasons are displayed but when I add the root folder of the show to the custom library it does not add all the seasons.

I’ve gone through the Plex guide on naming libraries, but I still have missing seasons in my library. Any idea on what I can do?

The ROOT folder is just that, the ROOT. That folder doesn’t count so all plex sees is season 01, season 02, season 03, etc…

Example.

Game of Thrones (2011) <-- Say this is ROOT
  Season 01
  Season 02
  Season 03

Plex will parse this folder and see only

ROOT
Season 01 <- Whats this? Where does it go? What series does it go to?
Season 02 <- Whats this? Where does it go? What series does it go to?
Season 03 <- Whats this? Where does it go? What series does it go to?

You have two options here.

  1. Add the top level folder.
Custom TV Shows <-- Say this is ROOT
Game of Thrones (2011) <- Plex will see this and try to match a series called Game of Thrones that was released in 2011.
    Season 01
    Season 02
    Season 03
  1. Double up the folder structure the series is in
Game of Thrones (2011) <-- Say this is ROOT

    Season 01
    Season 02
    Season 03

Sorry, I guess the using the term root was not correct. I’ve added the top level folder of the show in question.

My folder structure looks like:

Television
Bobs Burgers
Season 1
Bobs Burgers - S01E01
Bobs Burgers - S01E02
etc.
Season 2
Bobs Burgers - S02E01
Bobs Burgers - S02E02
etc.

In my custom library I added the folder Bobs Burgers and it adds 3 out of the 4 seasons.

Because of the sheer amount of folders I have, I’d really rather just add the top level folder of each show rather than each season, but it doesn’t pick up all the seasons.

You can’t do either.

You can’t do that.

From your folder structure above, Television is your top level(ROOT). That is the only path you will add to plex.

Don’t do that. Add the “Television” folder to the library.

Yes, in the default section of Plex (TV Shows) it has the root folder “Television” and all my shows appear with no issues.

For my custom library, I do not want to add ALL my shows, just certain ones.

So I cannot add the top level folders of just those shows?

Okay!! I know exactly what you want!! You will need to do what I suggested above. ITEM 2.
2. Double up the folder structure the series is in

Game of Thrones (2011) <-- Say this is ROOT
Game of Thrones (2011) <- Plex will see this and try to match a series called Game of Thrones that was released in 2011.
    Season 01
    Season 02
    Season 03

I use this method for family/friends with kids. Their kids get the “kid section” of my library but every so often the parent wants their kids to have something from the “adult” sections.

Take a look at this post.

Okay I will try that

Stupid question: do I have to include the year in the shows top level folder is Game of Thrones (2011)?

I ALWAYS include the year on EVERY series I add. But in your case, because plex actually found Bobs Burger then probably not. JUST make sure the top folder has the same name as the sub-folder.

Game of Thrones
  Game of Thrones
Game of Thrones (2011)
  Game of Thrones (2011)
Bobs Burgers
  Bobs Burgers
Bob's Burgers (2011)
  Bob's Burgers (2011)

Holy crap that worked, thank you so much!

This has been driving me nuts…

An alternate method, one that I use, is to have TWO main parent folders for TV Shows:
TV Shows
TV Favorite Shows

You can add both folders to your main TV library, and only the Favorite folder to the secondary library. It removes the need to have double layers/special treatment for any of the TV shows.

I do like that idea but will leave you with only two options. The method I use allows you to add any one series to any one library. And for me I don’t have a “favorite”. Just when family/friends ask for something for their kids. I share out only what they want.

I actually have five TV Show libraries, one specifically for sharing. I was keeping it simple.
