I am having trouble creating a sub-library. What I need to do is create a library that only contains certain shows from my main library. I create the library then select the show subfolders from the main TV show library when adding folders, the same subfolder is in both libraries. The result is a complete mess. The library shows duplicates when there are none, checking on the files it is showing an episode from each of 2 different shows as a duplicate (see image below). I doesn’t add all the seasons in a show and for a show that has 122 episodes it says it added 147. When I play an episode from that show it actually plays an episode from a completely unrelated show. I have temporarily solved the problem by copying the shows to a dedicated folder and deleting the subfolders, however, this eats up a lot of space. The following is an example of the file structure where the subset is using folders from the main library.
Main Library
Show 1
Season 1
Season 2
Show 2
Season 1
Season 2
Show 3
Season 1
Season 2
Show 4
Season 1
Season 2
Show 5
Season 1
Season 2
Subset Library
Show 2 Folder Added
Season 1
Season 2
Show 4 Folder Added
Season 1
Season 2
Thinking about it for a bit, it might be beacuse the folder added to the library is the actual TV Show folder and so Plex only sees the Season data and not the show folder. I might try nesting one more level down and see if that works better.
Why are you not using sharing labels instead?
They exist solely for the purpose of filtering down an existing library. So you don’t have to resort to creating several libraries.
I looked at them and they don’t really seem to do what I need. My mother in law moved in and as opposed to having multiple main libraries that my wife and I are comfortable with it is easier just to create a library specifically for her with all of the shows she likes regardless of which library they are in on our account (she’s 80 years old and just teaching her to navigate a Fire TV is mind numbing). The only issue I had was having to host 2 copies of the same show, a little thinking about it and that was corrected..
Well, modern TV, Classic TV, Miniseries and cooking. The solution is to create a library and add the show’s folder to it but make sure you nest it in another folder. Then add the Show Folder to the new library…
This will eventually break down once you add more folders and/or start to use “local assets” (i.e. external subtitle files, local posters and other metadata).
It might not do so immediately, but only after a while, and then suddenly.
That’s OK, I generally create the metadata myself or have it updated by Plex as the shows are mostly dvd rips (I have well over 1000 DVDs, garage sales, Plex DVR and thrift stores are awesome). I never save the metadata seperately.
Also, I cannot believe that Plex is not capable of recursing 1 extra level without major problems.
