Need some help fixing duplicate/mismatched files

EDIT - Solved: this was the cause of the problem: “…if you add /TV Shows to your Plex TV Show library, then you cannot have subfolders such as ~Documentaries underneath”.

After resolving that, things are now displaying correctly. Thanks to FordGuy61 for spotting that!

I’m finding that several of my locally-stored TV shows aren’t showing up in the ‘TV Shows’ view. They show up in folder view, but when check the thumbnail/title/description, the info is from a different show. And if I do ‘Get Info’ on an episode, I often find multiple file paths listed.

Here’s an example of the BBC shows Planet Earth and Big Cats, along with what I’ve done to try to fix them:

  • Moved the folders for both shows out of those scanned by Plex
  • Updated the library
  • Confirmed both shows were gone from folder view and didn’t show when using the search box
  • Emptied the trash
  • Cleaned the bundles
  • Made certain that the two folders and their contents were named properly
  • Dragged Planet Earth back into the correct folder, updated the library and confirmed that it showed up in folder view
  • Checked thumbnails/titles/descriptions of each file: all were correct
  • Did ‘Get Info’ on each episode: all were pointing to the correct files
  • Dragged Big Cats back into the correct folder, updated the library and confirmed that it showed up in folder view
  • Checked thumbnails/titles/descriptions of each file: the three episodes incorrectly show this info for the first three episodes of Planet Earth
  • Did ‘Get Info’ on each episode: each file showed two entries - the incorrect Planet Earth episode at the top and the correct Big Cats one below it (screenshot).

Any ideas how I can resolve this?

Which folder did you add to the TV library, TV or ~Documentaries?

Given the structure shown in the screenshot, it should be ~Documentaries.

Plex does not support subfolders like ~Documentaries if the TV Show library is pointed at /Volumes/Media/TV.

Edit: Also use two digits for the episode number. Planet Earth is s01e1. Should be s01e01.

Plex does not support subfolders like ~Documentaries if the TV Show library is pointed at /Volumes/Media/TV

As in, it doesn’t support subfolders with a ‘~’ character? Or it doesn’t support subfolders below the folder added to the library unless they’re TV show folders containing ‘Season 01’, ‘Season 02’, etc.?

Also use two digits for the episode number. Planet Earth is s01e1. Should be s01e01

Good catch - I’ll fix that!

AFAIK, ~ & similar characters are OK.

What I was trying to say (albeit not very clearly), was that if you add /TV Shows to your Plex TV Show library, then you cannot have subfolders such as ~Documentaries underneath.

However, it is certainly OK to add ~Documentaries to a TV Show library, as it is the folder containing the TV show files.

Examples:

Not supported:

/TV Shows <-- Folder added to Plex Library
.../~Documentaries <-- Not supported
....../Planet Earth

Supported:

/TV Shows
.../~Documentaries <-- Folder added to Plex Library
....../Planet Earth
/TV Shows <-- Folder added to Plex Library
....../Planet Earth

Another thread along similar lines:

if you add /TV Shows to your Plex TV Show library, then you cannot have subfolders such as ~Documentaries underneath

That was the problem: once I resolved that, things are displaying correctly. Well spotted and thanks!
