Cross subnet server access

Server Version#: 1.21.2.3943
Player Version#: 1.33.0.2444-a220eae4

Hi Guys,

I have two subnet, 192.168.100.0/24 and 192.168.1.0/24. I put one of my server in 192.168.1.0/24, and I want to access it from 192.168.100.0/24. I set the “List of IP addresses and networks that are allowed without auth” as 192.168.0.0/255.255.0.0. And it does make me can access it from explorer(chrome). However, I cannot do the same if I use the Plex App. The server could not be connected from app.

Any idea?

I suppose you’re using the wrong configuration option.
In order to allow Plex server/clients to see each other across subnets you need to set Settings > [Server Name] > Network > LAN networks

LAN networks

Comma separated list of IP addresses or IP/netmask entries for networks that will be considered to be on the local network when enforcing bandwidth restrictions. If set, all other IP addresses will be considered to be on the external network and will be subject to external network bandwidth restrictions. If left blank, only the server’s subnet is considered to be on the local network.

It’s not incorrect. That’s an acceptable subnet and mask.

(I agree that your suggestions are fine as well!)

I agree with the notion that routing between the subnets is the more important issue, and the suggestion to test connectivity.

The ...allowed without auth and LAN networks settings affect Plex behavior, but neither of them is required before cross-subnet connections are possible. They are about skipping authentication (which may or may not be desired) and skipping bandwidth controls, respectively.

OP, how are your two subnets configured? What device(s) route or firewall traffic between them?

I’m just a classless guy.

(Wait, that sounds bad …)

I’m on a crusade against “classful” notions about subnets and masks!

I’m not sure if a jump box would be relevant. That’s a hardcore approach to network security.

I agree completely about connectivity between the subnets.

I have a few names for him

Adding the same information for the subnet to “lan network” works. Thanks guys.

You didn’t ask if Plex was programmed to use “classless” networks.

I didn’t ask because I know that it is. I’m using a /22 myself.

Stamp out classful thinking! Down with archaic subnetting! VLSM for everyone!
