Sharing across network segment

Server Version#:1.15.3.876-ad6e39743
Player Version#:6.3.5.5679-66bbf7308-Plex

We use two different routers on the same home network. Is it possible to share files with the other network segment without having to use the internet?

Thanks for your help!!

Using the Plex Web App @ https://app.plex.tv go to Settings | Network | LAN Networks and populate the subnets that are part of your local LANs. Make sure that TCP port 32400 is allowed between the subnets locally.

Not able to locate LAN Networks under Plex Web App. I found Settings, Network but not LAN Networks.

LAN Networks is a field under Networks. Make sure you have toggled Show Advanced

Looks like Plex removed that setting with 1.15.x

This is all I see under Networks.

It is a Plex Pass setting, and still exists in 1.15.x

LAN Networks

Very few people will need to set or change this preference. It simply lets you specify which IP addresses or networks will be considered to be “local” to you. If you set any bandwidth limits under Remote Access, those do not apply to “local” playback and only take effect for remote playback. By default, only the network subnet on which the server is located is considered to be “local” (which is appropriate for the vast majority of users).

Tip! : This feature requires an active Plex Pass Subscriptions subscription for the Plex Media Server admin Plex account.

What is the address range on the two segments?

How are things configured? Can you route between the networks without traversing the Internet?

If supported by your Plex client, you can try directly entering the IP address of the Plex server. Not all clients support this capability.

Depending on how your routing is configured, you may have to give the client a static route to the PMS network or set its default gateway to be the router to the other network.

Plex Media Player for Windows & Mac supports setting manual servers.

  1. Change PMP to TV Mode (click on the box w/ “TV” inside it).
  2. Click on your avatar/username & choose Settings -> Manual Servers
  3. Add the IP address of your PMS server.

I have two routers connected to a Comcast modem/router servicing two parts of my house. The first router ip address is 10.0.0.167. The second router ip address is 10.0.0.94 on the Comcast modem/router. The IP range of the first router is 192.168.1.1 - 192.168.1.254. The IP range of the second router is 172.16.0.1 - 172.16.0.254. The Plex Media Server IP address is 172.16.0.9. This is the first time I have tried anything like this on Plex.

Out of curiosity, is your network design complex by design or due to other challenges?

The house is wired with Ethernet which I use to connect to the Comcast modem. The second router is in the basement which has problems staying connected to the first router wireless connection so I just added a second router for the basement. Now I would like to see if it possible to share the Plex Media Service across the two network segments.

Again thanks for your help.

What are the router models? You should really just convert both routers into makeshift WiFi access points and simplify your network design.

The first router is Netgear Orbi RBK40. The second router (basement) is NETGEAR Nighthawk AC1900.

Based on the information in your first post, you have a Comcast gateway that is at the very least both a modem and a router. It is already performing NAT so having two additional routers hanging off it makes for a very complicated LAN environment–Double NAT situation. Is the cable modem gateway provided by Comcast or owned? What model is that cable modem gateway?

Is it also a WiFi access point as well?

Its provided by Comcast, the wireless is disabled on the gateway.

Lets start with the Orbi. Change it to AP mode. Follow the guide here:
https://kb.netgear.com/31218/How-do-I-configure-my-Orbi-router-to-act-as-an-access-point

Lucky for you, your Nighthawk also supports AP mode as well:

If I change both routers to access point will they able to see my Plex Media Server?

Yes then all your devices will be on the LAN segment of the Comcast Xfinity gateway which is 10.0.0.0/24–instead of three LAN subnet on three different routers.

Excellent. I will make the changes tomorrow. Thank you for your help.
