Current Missing Features & Bugs with the Android App Experience Preview

Inspired by dklein, here is a list of features not available on Android

  1. ASS subtitles are being transcoded.
  2. There is no codec or track information on the media title page (e.g., showing if an item is 4K/1080p, or has Dolby Atmos/EAC3 5.1, Stereo, etc.).
  3. No way to pre-select which track or version of an episode or movie to play.
  4. No menu in the player itself to show playback information.
  5. No Picture-in-Picture (PIP) support. When minimized or apps are swapped, content does not pause; instead, audio continues to play in the background.
  6. Unable to queue download.
  7. Third-party subtitle search is not available.
  8. Double-tap to forward and back is not working. ‘Gestures’ please add them back
  9. “Merge Recently Added” items is not working and shows libraries separately.
  10. The search feature does not respect user options for opting out; it still shows popular searches even when all online media sources are disabled.
  11. Playback gets re-cropped when player buttons are pulled up.
  12. Horizontal scrolling is inconvenient for shows with 100+ episodes (e.g., Dragon Ball Z, One Piece).
  13. Clicking on the logo or name of a show does not take you to the show’s main screen. On the normal app, it takes you to the show’s home screen.
  14. No “fast scroll” or “scroll by alphabet” option when scrolling through libraries
  15. TV show shuffle is missing (by Werdna89).
  16. TV show playlists are missing (by Blindie).
  17. No theme music plays when on a show’s page (by SASSBS).
  18. Lack of settings to configure within the app (by SASSBS).
  19. Hard to reorder libraries (by SASSBS).
  20. Collections: tapping on them does nothing for TV shows and movies (by SASSBS).
  21. When all Discover visibility settings are set to “Disabled for Managed Accounts,” the Discover tab is still visible on Managed Accounts, and Discover/Trending strips appear on the Home page (acknowledged by a Plex employee on Reddit) (by RxBrad).
  22. On the Collections tab of a library, the contents of a collection cannot be viewed. Tapping on an item does nothing (by RxBrad).
  23. For the Movies library, when Collections visibility is set to “Hide items which are in collections,” the current behavior instead hides collections but still shows their items (by RxBrad).
  24. TV shows with lots of episodes in a season showing no information on Load.
  25. Lock to landscape in player (handy when you’re lying on your side) by Forceflow
  26. The external player option is missing. Additionally, please add the ability to play different versions using the external player. Currently, Plex only plays the first version when using an external player, even if a different version is selected.
  27. Currently Continue Watching row on home screen is limited to 20 items only @blackzwe

Requests

  1. Add MPV as a player on Android, similar to the iOS app (useful for playing H.264 High 10 videos). Fixed added software decoding
  2. Add a cache for rewinding. Currently, the Plex app only caches forward playback, which causes delays during rewinding. This issue is specific to Android and does not occur on iOS.
  3. Add the ability to edit metadata from the app, such as adding items to a collection (by SASSBS)

TV show shuffle is missing as well. Really hope this gets added back in, as it’s something I use every day.

TV Show playlists missing

No theme music when in show page
Lack of settings to configure in app
Hard to get libraries reordered
Collections when tapping on them nothing happens for TV and Movies

Not missing but would be great to edit metadata from app i.e. add to collection

A couple bugs I’ve noticed on the initial release

  1. When all Discover visibility settings set to “Disabled for Managed Accounts”
The Discover tab is still visible on Managed Accounts, and Discover/Trending strips appear on the Home page. (acknowledged by a Plex employee on Reddit)

  2. On the Collections tab of a library, cannot view the contents of a collection. Tapping an item does nothing.

  3. For my Movies library, my Collections visibility is set to “Hide items which are in collections”. Current actual behavior, however, is “Hide collections but show their items”

I might have missed it but I can’t see where to set the playback speed

Playback speed control (among other things) was already on the list of missing features to be added later; see “features” in this post.

I assume we’ll also be getting the ability to customize the home screen like the normal android app? Specifically the ability to only show certain libraries on home.

Also, when browsing movie library in the experience app, it does not handle collections properly. i.e. collections which i have set to “hide items in this collection” on other apps will just show the collection poster, but the experience is showing every individual item and not showing the collection poster at all (in other apps this only happens when you change the sort order from the default A-Z to something like date added, duration, release date, etc).

Actually I figured this one out. Had to unfavorite the libraries in the library tab, this removed them from the home screen.

Live TV guide forces display into portrait mode on Android tablets

Devs have already mentioned that the primary focus is on mobile devices, not tablets or TVs. Support for them will be added later.

Does this mobile release include tablets?
You can install the Plex Preview Preview on tablet devices, but our initial focus has been specifically on mobile phones. As the preview period goes on, we do plan to include more tweaks and improvements to make the experience on tablets better. Just be aware that there might be some bumps when using a tablet to start.

When you are in the movie page, the page where you can hit the play button. If you rotate the phone to landscape mode, the movie background won’t show correctly.

Phone: Pixel 6 Pro

Orientation isn’t automatic while turning the phone. When it is landscape and you exit the player, the whole app interface stays landscape.

Subtitles are “ugly”. They are with a black background and I’m not able to change the style of it.

Not sure where that last movie on my Continue Watching list came from. Not mine, not watched, and not on any other of my clients. The first image is from the current app and reflects all my clients. The second is from the new app!

During very limited testing, on android phone, I noticed that the progress bar wouldn’t move, it would just kinda stay where it was left. If I moved it to 12:15 into a particular piece of content, the time would update but not progress as I continued watching the show.

What I’m missing, at first glance:

  • Lock to landscape in player (handy when you’re lying on your side)
  • PiP support
  • Select subtitle before starting media (or just seeing what subtitles are available, WITHOUT starting the media)

Dealbreaker flaw: main libraries need to be more accessible. Incredibly non-negotiable before this goes to the main app channel. The User should be able to pin selected libraries to the bottom navigation instead of 4 hardcoded tabs. If any are fixed, it should only be the Home menu. I have not nor will I ever use 2/4 selections there. I support Plex promoting the on demand content as a revenue source to draw n new users, but this must be customizable, or why am I bothering to host the my server and content. And by extension if this is not customizable: why am running it on my hardware and opening Plex instead of Netflix when my own libraries are 3 taps deep. There are competitors to Plex, and if Plex is going to bury my local content, it loses its purpose versus other apps, and becomes an online streaming amalgam, which is not what I host a server for.

Improvement: Within the TV library view, the vertically scrolling list should buffer blank placeholders in the canvas for the full vertical scroll. Currently scrolling from A to Z with a large library causes the app to pause and load multiple times as new thumbnails are streamed in. Use a placeholder and continue scrolling. Current behavior is a poor user experience.

Bug; The TV library view currently does not respect the collections setting, and will how all shows regardless of if they are set to hide in a collection or not, breaking long time library organization. I’m sure this bug will be fixed.

Could it be from Plex’s online service? Can you check if it’s from your own library or from Plex?
