Current Missing Features & Bugs with the iOS App Experience Preview

Hi,

Had a little while to play with the new app on iOS (so glad there is support for Multichannel Spatial Audio!), but have noticed the following missing features/bugs that I didn’t see listed on the Documentation page.

UI/UX
Subtitles
HDR/DV
Codec Support & Transcoding
Live TV
Metadata & Logos
Downloads
  • Some users are reporting issues with completing downloads on iOS, while others it is working normally.
  • No ability to set auto download for new episodes like legacy app.
  • Some users are reporting that download Quality settings are not respected.
  • No detail on what download Quality settings mean… ie what is the Mbps of “High”, “Medium”, “Low”? What is the codec?
Misc
Discontinued Features Not Migrating to New App

Over all though the app has been stable and playback does not have some other usual stutter that can be found with some iOS/Apple TV clients and UHD media, so that’s a big plus

Thanks!

EDIT: To keep it easy for new users popping into this thread, I’ll update this top post with issues as they are identified from users below.

EDIT 2: Cleaning up the list into categories that can be open/closed for easier navigation.

Doesn’t look like there’s a way to see Playback Info (on IOS)? Also doesn’t play in Portrait mode, only Landscape.

Hi!

Thanks for the quick and extensive feedback! I’ll say that while some of that stuff are known issues that we’re addressing, some were new and I’ll be sure to add them to our list for tracking!

Quick add of another “missing” feature:

  • No PIP support, and when minimized or apps are swapped, content does not pause but rather audio continues to play in the background.

Thanks!

Another add:

  • You cannot mark TV episodes as watched/unwatched or play an episode form the Season screen. IE something like a long hold on an episode thumbnail should trigger a menu to Play/Resume, Mark as Watched/Unwatched, Download, etc rather than needing to load up the episode page in full every time.

Edit: I think something similar to how a long hold on a Movie item post works in the library would be viable here in the Season view for a TV Episode.

  • When tapping on the “View All” to see all content in a collection, for Movies, a random list of movies is populating rather than the correct collection. For TV, shows, nothing loads. However, on the actual Movie/Show page itself, the correct items are listed in the related movies/collection area, it’s only on tapping “View All” that things go awry.

Despite the prominent position of Live TV, I can’t seem to access my own TV tuner that’s setup with my Plex server. Is one’s own live TV service no longer supported or am I missing it somewhere? Also can’t find DVR options anywhere.

I can confirm that I’m not able to access my Tuner in this version, however my DVR is accessible under “My Libraries”. I just needed to add it as a favorite for it to show in the library drop down menu in the top left.

The one thing missing from this new design that I find a little annoying is that there’s no way to edit what is on the Home screen. I’m sure I’m not unique running several servers and the inability to edit / pin servers to the Home screen means one of my servers is not visible unless I access the Libraries screen. That’s extra and unnecessary steps IMHO.

EDIT: I’ve noticed that I can actually see them on my iPhone it’s just the iPad version seems to have them hidden for some reason.

-Another new issue: HDR and DV HDR metadata is being stripped from transcodes rather than being passed or tonemapped and burned in. Media plays back flat/log.

-Media preview thumbnail not shown when scrubbing timeline, and timeline touch target is small and not always responsive for scrubbing.

I agree it would be nice to be able to edit/change order on the Home Screen. I will note it took a little bit of time for my libraries to populate there and show above the “On Demand” content on my devices.

FYI, in the player there is no 10 or 30 second skip back and forth buttons.

Thanks to all of you testing.

I wonder when they will feature freeze the legacy apps?

And Plex… Please release Plexamp for TVs.

The app doesn’t play (Direct Play/Stream) DV Profile 5 correctly too, at least on supported Apple devices (2020 iPad Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max), it no longer renders properly like the production app and instead shows the green and purple effect regardless of the container (mpv/mp4).

It’s all still very new and I am still trying to navigate around everything. I am not sure that I agree with Plex’s blog post saying that this app should be easier to navigate, as all of my users are going to need their hands held through this change for sure. This new app wasn’t created out of a hope to improve the UX for users, it was out of a business need to combine and utilize a singular codebase (and sell more FAST channels, Ad-supported content and PPV). Hopefully they actually listen to long time users issues and complaints and are able to iterate and improve the product before fully launching it. I really don’t want another Sonos situation.

I did find that if you went to “My Libraries” > select the library on the top left (or double tap the “My Libraries” navigation item), there is an option to reorder them. It will reorder them on the Home Screen as well, but unfortunately there is no way to further refine anything else on the Home Screen beyond that

Looks like it’s no longer possible to manually specify a server address.

Just at a quick glance, a major major flaw that I see that carried over from the original is the inability to see a trailer from your own personal movies as well as the inability to branch off and explore other films actors in said movie (from your own library) are in. You have to back all the way out and physically search the movie (you already own) and look it up that way. Huge time waster.
Unless I’m completely blind, I can’t seem to find my playlists.
Appreciate all that you guys do. Thank you.

My TV library is incredibly buggy. I can only access items in “continue watching” and “recently added”. Trying to access a TV show via search or browsing results in infinite loading. Trying to access a show that is pinned in a smart collection is not loading (infinite loading on the modal).

I also am not seeing any of the clearart on any content. Maybe due to me having plex-sourced media disabled but I would like some confirmation.

Also, local extras that aren’t trailers are not showing up for movies. Trailers are viewable with the trailer button, but the thumbnail below does not show up
