Plex Android TV app bugs that I've identitied to date

@marekszulik @ManuelPG @romancamelia @akila_plex @sixones

I rely on Plex’s Android TV app across about 7 Android TV boxes between my home and my parent’s home.

Android TV boxes used are 4 nvidia shield tv 2017 boxes and 3 maverick 4k mediaboxes.

I find the same bugs on all 7 devices.

These bugs have been around for a very long time now. Are you aware of these?

Bugs fixed or features added are blurred out below.

BUGS:

1. Scrubbing back and forth for a bit on a playing video causes the video to freeze and sometimes causes the whole app to reboot itself with the plex logo.

  1. “Mark as unplayed” shows up in the long press menu for partially watched videos, but does not show up as an icon in the pre-play/details screen or in the “more” list for partially watched videos.

3. (FIXED) The “Mark as unplayed” option in the long press menu currently does not mark the item as unplayed, instead it incorrectly marks the item as played

  1. When watching videos back to back in a playlist, not all the videos get marked as played as each video completes but instead I have a stack of videos on my “continue watching” list with partial completions and then I need to go through each one and manually mark it as played.

  2. Scrolling down for a bit and then scrolling up once through a playlist, causes an odd animation jump that makes it look like the scrolling skipped an item during scrolling

  3. If I press left arrow on remote too many times in the preplay/details screen, it jumps to the sidebar on the left and then ends up opening the library that the highlight landed on and completely jumps me out of the preplay screen and in to that library. Then I have to manually make my way back to the video series I was looking at. If access to the sidebar is absolutely essential while in the preplay/details screen, please only allow library to be selected when pressing OK on the remote rather than opening the library purely based on it being highlighted.

  4. Posters on Android TV home screen in the plex channel duplicates in some instances

  1. (FIXED) My secondary plex server showing with incorrect libraries.

       On my android mobile app and on my plex web app, the libraries
       under my servers are correct as follows:

       COLOSSUS SERVER:

       * Movies
       * Music
       * Playlists
       * Specials
       * TV Shows

       POLARIS SERVER

       * Memories
       * Playlists

       On my android TV app and only when I login as the admin,
       the polaris server shows the wrong libraries (it seems to think
       it is my primary server) and incorrectly looks like this:

       COLOSSUS SERVER:

       * Movies
       * Music
       * Playlists
       * Specials
       * TV Shows

       POLARIS SERVER

       * Movies
       * Music
       * Playlists
       * Specials
       * TV Shows

       This bug only happens when I’m logged in with my admin user
       and only on Android TV app only. If I log in on another type of
       Plex app (mobile or web), no bug. If I log in with another user
       on android tv app, no bug. But if I log in with my admin user on
       an android tv app, this bug appears.

  1. Selecting a tab LIBRARY or COLLECTIONS inside any library does indeed change to that tab, however the cursor jumps back to RECOMMENDED even though it is in the LIBRARY or COLLECTIONS tab

  2. If a row from multiple server libraries is pinned to my HOME screen and one of those servers are offline, then it brings the whole home screen to a halt. The home screen just circles trying to find all the servers and will eventually only show the list of online servers, but takes a while.

11. Old movies are constantly being pushed to the front of my “recently added movies” collection. Not sure why this happens. It is happening specifically on my “Specials” movie library and specifically for my own personally recorded videos that don’t have any online metadata. Does plex just decide every now and again that that is recently added even though I added the content about a year ago now?

  1. The tabs on the plex home screen is titled “Home” and “Watchlist”. Seems odd to have a home tab in a home section. The tabs should rather be “Recommended” and “Watchlist”. This will also align it to the other plex client apps.

13. I added items to my watchlist from my own plex library, and on some of my Android TV boxes, I see the items in the watchlist and on other Android TV boxes the watchlist is empty. This has something to do with plex confusing user profile content. This problem comes about after I’ve switched from someone else as a user to myself. Then I need to force stop the app and restart it for it to properly show my watchlist and sometimes it even does this with my home screen and my playlist too.

  1. My recently added tv shows are showing the wrong show titles on the home screen

FEATURE REQUESTS:

  1. With each of my family members (5 in total) being signed in to 7 android tv devices, 1 phone, 1 tablet, 1 computer EACH, it is a huge hassle to have to configure the sidebar for each of these devices so that they stay consistent. As an example, if I add a new library to the server or if something like “Discover” is introduced, I need to login to 10 devices for each of the 5 family members to reorganise the layout of the sidebar. I would love if the client settings for the sidebar could be synced to the cloud so I just have to change it on one device per user, and all that user’s sidebar configuration settings will be synced across devices.

  2. I would also like the option to sync client “experience” settings across client devices

  3. The action buttons in a playlist are at the top of the screen instead of where it used to be on the left of the screen. This means that if I am scrolling and am at the bottom of the scroll list, I need to scroll all the way up of the long playlist to get to the action buttons. I would like the action buttons on the left.

  4. Why are Watchlists and Playlists not treated the same way in the UI? They are both lists unique to a user. They should both be treated the same. I prefer that they both be items in the sidebar rather than how watchlist is currently treated as a tab in the home screen.

We have seen this, and are looking into the issues reported, but wanted to have data on them before replying (and also saw the post on Reddit). No need to tag all the Android developers.

Thanks for letting me know. I wasn’t sure who was best to tag or whether it would only be seen by certain developers, so I tagged all. Apologies if it came across as pushy. Having had some of these bugs for quite some time (some for years), I really wanted to make sure it wasn’t lost in the noise in the forum

I’m happy to provide any additional data or insight that may be required to get to the root of the bugs or help clarify the feature requests

I would like to take the opportunity to report 2 unusual “bugs” that I have encountered:

  • newer version of Plex client cannot play some of the files I have (small file with AAC stereo) whereas older version, eg. 8.26.0.28833 can play those files without any hiccups. Were there any changes in the Exoplayer engine in newer versions?

  • fast forward/rewind during playback with newer version can take considerably more time than older version 8.26.0.28833. You can reproduce it: after playing the movie for quite some time. The first ff/rewind action works fast and reliable. Multiple ff/rewind actions after the first one will slow it down to a crawl with the spinning wheel on screen but the movie will eventually play like after 1 minute, which is quite long. It doesn’t matter if I ff/rewind 10 seconds or 30 seconds, the behaviour is the same. This only happens on Plex Android TV. Other devices (web player, Android phone) do not exhibit this behaviour. It baffles me why the older version works faster than the newer version? Has it got something to do with the Exoplayer engine in the newer version?

I suspect along the way something changed in the Android TV version which causes this behaviour. If you need any more info on this please let me know. I can provide the info for troubleshooting. Thank you for your time!

and, of course, the general UI is borked too.
the scrolling speed thru-out the whole app has been purposely slowed down, and there are UI bugs that were previously fixed that have re-occurred again.

Updated to include bug item 9 in the original post

Updated to include feature request 4 in the original post

that will be related to the overall UI issues where the correct section isn’t highlighted correctly.
was a bug that was present in 8.x, was fixed, and has re-appeared in 9.x

Updated to reflect that Item 8 now fixed.

Please add to that;

External forced SRT subtitles causing playback failure (video will not play, just stuck on loading wheel).

And apostrophee in users names incorrectly displaying as “&#39” which is the character code for apostrophee, when it should just display as an apostrophee.

Bugs 10, 11, 12 and 13 added to the original post

the UI issues still remain after numerous releases since originally reported.

Particularly frustrating, since some (most?) had already been fixed in a different branch, but were not merged when the TrueHD/Atmos issue was finally eliminated.

8.28 had the sidebar navigation fixed. I want to say the Discovery hub or the new demuxer is where that branch was no longer used. Just merge those branches please!

@DaveBinM any updates on these AndroidTV bugs?

this one is now resolved

have to say that a lot (maybe most) of your bugs i’ve never experienced.
is it possible some of them are caused by local plex database corruption?

have you tried some maintenance on your database?

Plex HTPC from the top, to bottom of my movie library takes 13 seconds

Nvidia Shield 4 minutes

I understand android is not as powerful as a computer but 18 times faster?
I only use that example because it’s the same controller

It’s hard to compare Plex for Windows or Plex Web, but it’s as fast as you can move your mouse

On a phone or tablet, as fast as you can swipe

I can zip around other apps using the Shield at a comparable rate to HTCP with Plex so it’s not a limitation of the device or android in general

I don’t think Zain_Ajam is having database issues. I’ve experienced almost all his same problems (and then some) except for the ones related to watchlists and playlists because I don’t use those

the issue where old items were re-appearing on the newly added list could be a database corruption issues.

i’ve never came across that issue, every issue i’ve come across has pretty much always been UI related.
