Remember before the current design it was like that, libraries where at the top? this is just change for the sake of change, no other reason, like you said if you have many libraries scrolling from left to right is worse
Iām seeing this with all transcoded multichannel audio, not just TrueHD. Iāve added to the tracker.
General impressions on a first gen 4k apple tv:
Individual movie/series pages are better. Getting there seems much clunkier.
New features:
Occasionally gets the wrong language version clearart/clearlogo (different language) but overall seems to work really well with my multilingual library. Nothing that having access to manually altering it serverside wonāt fix, is already working within the parameters of what I would expect to have to fix manually.
Love the feature.
Regressions:
Dolby vision not working (any profile)
Dvd source (480i60/576i50 containers in mkv) playback greatly inferior. No deinterlacing on pal content, extreme macroblocking not present on old app with at least some ntsc.
Anything with TrueHD audio (tried 1080p mpeg2 and 2160p hevc) doesnāt start playback. DTS-HD MA and FLAC 5.1 work fine.
Major issues/limitations carried over from old app:
Dolby Digital Plus Atmos doesnāt get passed through, is converted to pcm 5.1
No access to local season extras (probably the most common form for series extras!)
Looks like Local Season Extras a just below āRatings and Reviewsā content. Iām seeing them on my media.
Iām also not having issues with TrueHD playback media playback, but it is transcoding to FLAC or Opus like the old app.
For DV, are you seeing HDR fallback on Profile 7?
Confirmed on DD+ Atmos.
EDIT: Iām also seeing the lack of deinterlacing and macro-blocking issues with SD NTSC and PAL interlaced content.
New player does not support Apple TVās Jog Shuttle (ie pause, run finger over the click wheel to jog through content with preview stills to precisely target location).
Thanks, looks like I had an oopsie with the season extras and they are indeed working.
HDR fallback is working where available.
Iāll test the truehd thing more extensively, but it was the only common denominator of all the files that completely refused to play during my initial runthrough.
Edit: potential reason for oopsie: When not showing seasons for (presently) single season series, season extras donāt show up. Probably self-inflicted, butā¦
AV:
- Still seeing same audio issue with Stereo-paired HomePods where the audio keeps playing / is out of sync for 1-3 seconds on play/resume/skip
Live TV & DVR
- I cannot find the Live TV/DVR section at all, even though it is in the AppStore version of the app.
- I do not see the Plex LiveTV option, either.
Would be really nice UX, if when the app opens you could just press play to continue watching first item, right now focus starts on your profile at top, that seems like a very small oversight that could be fixed to improve reuse UX.
Also it seems you guys arenāt caching the wallpapers its super slow to load them even the ones youāve seen already going back and forth
Live TV is at the top of the screen next to the Libraries tab. In that tab, youāll need to scroll down on the left side to find your local Tunerā¦itās a bit hidden at the moment with Plex FAST channels taking prominence.
Profile 8 DV also displaying as just HDR10.
Looks like the option to shuffle playback is missing, I use this frequently from the collections view in particular.
Thanks for opening up the preview program, eager to see the improvements on the fanless AppleTV units in particular. Noticing an improvement in direct play already on items that were formally transcoding when I have subtitles on.
Tried pretty extensively and anything with a TrueHD track is just giving me a black screen and playback doesnāt start serverside. Meanwhile everything else at least plays, even if all DV profiles seem to not work.
First gen Appletv 4k.
Are you using an AppleTV HD or 4K?
Hello Plex Team,
I recently tested the beta version of the updated Plex app on Apple TV, and I noticed a couple of significant changes that I wanted to provide feedback on.
Firstly, the removal of the reflective focus effect when navigating between items is, in my opinion, a major regression compared to the current version. This subtle but impactful effect added a lot of charm and polish to the interface, making the experience more immersive and visually engaging. It would be great to see this feature retained or reintroduced.
Secondly, I noticed that the spacing between text and other elements, such as movie posters and thumbnails, feels a bit cramped in the beta. Adding more space would improve readability and give the interface a cleaner, more polished look.
Additionally, I observed a few other issues in the beta:
When playing a file (movie, series, etc.), the on-screen playback bar is identical to the one on the mobile app, featuring buttons for play/pause, next, and previous files. On Apple TV, this is redundant since the remote already has a dedicated play/pause button. This UI element takes up unnecessary space and detracts from the streamlined Apple TV experience.
The playback bar and associated text do not utilize the full width of the screen, which feels inconsistent and limits the visual appeal.
Pressing the back button while the playback bar is visible does not simply dismiss the bar but instead navigates back to the previous page (e.g., the home screen or the movie/series detail page). This behavior is unintuitive and disrupts the viewing experience.
Some background illustrations or images do not scale properly to fit the screen, resulting in portions of the image being cut off. This diminishes the aesthetic quality of the interface.
These details might seem small, but they contribute significantly to the overall user experience. I hope these points can be considered as you refine the app further.
Thank you for your hard work and dedication to improving Plex!
Thanks yeah it seems to be unable to transcode only audio
Force it to truehdā¦it will transcode the video
Gen 2 Apple TV 4k
You canāt tap while on the scrobbler bar to show what time your playback session will end.
Choppy framerate when direct playing a MKV H.264 1080p file with a 14mbps bitrate. Will further test different formats and bitrates when able.
Playback of the same file using Infuse does not have any framerate issues.
Iām not able to replicate this. TrueHD audio does transcode to Opus, but video is direct streaming for me. Is your content mkv or mp4?
Same here. I donāt have the Live TV tab at the top at all.
