thanks for the new custom collections!
Sadly I cant use it together for different libraries, but i need to connect the FullHD library + 4k library Releases together as one collection. If there are both releases avaiable it would be cool to add both as one into the collection and ask which to play when start playing. so everything is together as needed.
Best would be to connect tv shows and movies together also, but i can understand if you want to keep them different. But at least for FullHD + 4k its a must, each for tvshows and for movies.
Please add this and the feature comes to its best. thanks
Do you have those full HD / 4K items in different libraries (and not as different quality versions of the same item in the same library)?
yeah. each release quality has its own folder and is added to a different library
- FullHD and everything below movies
- 4k movies
- FullHD and everything below tvshows
4k tvshows
While you have your media in different libraries, you can’t get Plex to recognize it as different versions of the same files (=no option to query for which version of an item to play). If you want that you need to add those different folders to the same library.
okey i can understand that. but still it would be nice to add one quality pick of my favourite library to another ones collection. not everyone has everything in fullhd and 4k. i need to split fullhd and 4k into different libraries from different reasons.
Other than that, its not possible to connect different libraries (not only important for quality but people use different libraries for different movies etc., like doku). so maybe i would like to add a star wars documentary together with star wars movies. its just a must have missing option i think
You can have that by assigning items to a same-named collection in those libraries – but it’ll only work with the classic (non-smart) collections.
i tried to add a 4k movie into the fullhd collection (not smart), but i cant choose the already created collection. i will show you a screenshot

The collection assignment dialog will only display collections available in that library.
However you can create a new collection with the same name – Plex will then show the respective other collection as “related media”.
Here’s 2 examples:
(1) different media type collections linked by the same collection name – here: “Ghost in the Shell” movies and shows
(2) different editions of movies linked across 2 libraries – here: “Star Wars” w/ the “flying-in” intro in German vs. English; at the very bottom you can see another related tv-shows section
thanks for this suggestions. this would be a nice workaround idea for someone else i guess.
But i would love to use this custom collections on the dashboard and there i dont see any ways to display that content mix. thats why i asked to add this option to connect different library items into one collection. otherwise i would need to create one collection for every “topic” for every library. this will spam the dashboard and makes it really ugly.
The dashboard will anyway not consider “related content” from other libraries. Those additions to the home page / library recommended page are alway pointing to an exact collection from a single library.
There’s a feature suggestion to allow actual cross-library collections (however that predates the smart collections feature). Given those smart collections are based on a filter on a specific library, that might not necessarily apply to both types.
thanks for that thread suggestion. i guess its exactly what I want, but just for custom collections for now.
This feature would just give a lot of possibilities which are missing by a lot of people. watchlists, favourites, etc.
This wont work with just a single library support.
Edit: Its working for playlists… so that would be possible too i think. Options could be show collection in:
- both collections +/- dashboard
- no collection + dashboard
