Custom ordering resets to alphabetical order

so all my collections work in alphabetical or or release order, however when i uses customer and move them into order a custom order, the order resets to alphabetical.

when i go into the setting of the collections it is still set to custom.

this happens with all my collections.

i tried to change the sort name to order them, but still no joy
