I use a DDNS service for my Plex Media Server so I can stream remote. Been doing this for years with no problem until two days ago. The custom ULR’s keep changing from my DDNS address to (undefined) and I loose my connection. I change it back everything works then it changes back to undefined and I loose connection again. Ive uninstalled Plex media server including old registry setting and reinstalled with no change. The DDNS is working as I can ping the address and get a response back. It appears that something has changed on Plex’s end? Here’s my setup: Plex server running behind PIA VPN (TCP) on an ASUS AX-RT86U Pro Router with DDNS enabled. On the Server side , Windows 11-Headless and using Plex Relay. I’s prefer not to use the relay but do like having to not open extra ports to punch through the VPN. Cant find a way to contact Plex tech support to have them look at my account other than forums. Any help would be appreciated.
Crickets out here hasn’t any one had this problem? Just simply need to publish a custom server access ULR. They work for a few minutes then the ULRs change back to (undefined) Tried different host names different certificates heck even tried a new router. I can ping the ULRs so they are defiantly working. Very frustrating Plex that you’ve made it so difficult to get help!!
UPDATE, still not working, heck I even removed all server access links and just used plex relay with no URLs and it will work temporary then the 1st time the server reboots or any network change the error message comes back in the custom server access as (undefined) and access is no longer possible until I removed the undefined or add the correct DDNS address just for the whole process to restart. Still no way to contact Plex for help. Plex if you are reading this my 1-star review of the Plex pass app and subscription will continue and will be updated if and when I can ever get some help. Plex, you really should be ashamed of yourself, this is ridiculous.
So, I think I may have found the problem and so far, so good. I will only update if this wasn’t the fix. That said I wanted to post so some else with this problem will find help.
The issue appears to be from having an older Plex server account still showing but not active. This older Plex server(copy of existing) showed up after the last major update thus is when I started having problems. I believe the custom server access DDNS ULR I was posting was trying to find the wrong server and coming back as (undefined) with no explanation. The problem was corrected by removing the old server as shown here:
Now I don’t know if I really needed to do this part but to be safe, I then uninstalled all Plex related software but keep a backup of all the data and reinstall Plex then restored the backup files thus saving yourself a bunch of time. Here’s how:
In the end I did what Plex didn’t do (provide support to a paying customer). My review of Plex on Google and Amazon hasn’t changed and as a company I can’t recommend them because of this. Thing are all great until they aren’t and then you’re on your own.
Well the undefined errors came back even after all that…im out of ideas and just tired of the whole thing. To date not a peep from anyone even after emailing the moderator directly…thats says alot…im gonna give jellyfin and emby a shot to replace plex as its just a boat anchor now.
So, if I put in the custom URLs server address it works temporarily then return as (undefined) This is what I found:
I have been using Plex Dash to check the custom server URLs. It appears as there is a bug in the software because if I access the server and check the URLs page, it reverts back to (undefined) but if I don’t use Plex Dash and just use the web page the custom server access is not changing. I’ll let it sit for a few days and no longer use Plex Dash and get back if that indeed was the problem or not.
Plex you ready need to pay attention, still not a peep from anyone at Plex even after emailing different employees and the co-founder>>>just nuts
OK for me this problem has been resolved by not using the Plex Dash android application to view or edit Custom Server Access URLs. The Plex Dash is what was causing the problem and now is working fine that I am no longer using the app, I will post a review about that app as well on Google and Amazon. My frustration with both the community and Plex for no support is sickening to be nice. I just wonder if instead of paying the one time fee for Plex Pass if They would have paid more attention if I was paying the reoccurring fee and then canceled my subscription? In either case my support of plex is on the rocks and I only did this not for Plex but for someone who gets ignored by Plex and needs help.
Custom server URLs should not be generally needed, as the media server is able to recognize when IPs change and republishes the information to the cloud.
If you have DDNS which changes IPs quite often, then using a DDNS-provided URL as a custom URL is a useful trick.
I tried to set a custom URL via Plex Dash, and it seemed to work fine. If you’re setting it set to undefined that does sound like a possible bug, but I couldn’t reproduce so would need more specific steps.
In the future, I will note that providing logs can be extremely helpful for us to diagnose and assist. Otherwise we’re just wildly guessing.
