Has anyone found any work arounds for setting some daily limits or max play count or duration per user/day?
Same would love daily limits for remote users i.e. number of streams, or max # of minutes
@TotallyJuvenile Iām going to keep fighting for this one. It is still very relevant and vital for me even 4 years later after putting the request out there.
We all have that friend that thinks you are (Plex)flix, but they are still a good friend. You want to give them access but subtle hints at being gentle on the server really donāt work. āThe server did itā is a lot less confrontational way of handling it.
āIām sorry man, the server set a watch time per user limit after it analyzed usage statistics and determined the best amount of time for each user so all could enjoy and not eat up the 4 stream at a time limit.ā
This would be great! Iām honestly surprised it doesnāt have a lot more votes.
Until such time Plex even considers adding the feature, Iād recommend researching Tautulli monitoring combined with BlackTwinās JBOPS , an excellent set of custom scripts, most intended for Tautulli, that can limit various aspects.
I use a custom script to kill any 3rd stream opened by the same user because someone shared their account with several family members across the country. I donāt wish to prevent them totally - they just get a notice stating 'hey, you already have a stream watching āxā and āyā, and are limited to 2 streams."
Iām pretty sure JBOPS has a time and number of media limiter too.
Of course, to end streams, you have to have Plex pass.
I would really like this feature, as well. As a parent, itās challenging to moderate a childās use of technology. Obviously, I donāt want to ban some particular piece of tech entirely, but sometimes children need to know hard limits exist to encourage them to go do more productive things (like chores or playing outside). Heck, sometimes ADULTS need to know these hard limits exist (think Androidās āDigital Wellbeingā).
5 years and countingā¦
Got my vote as this is still not part of plex.
I think server admins should get more control over the clients. Currently the clients are much too powerful.
We need to rebalance the power!
Just added my vote. A feature like this would be fantastic. I access Plex via Home Users on two Xbox Consoles. I have a Home User set up for my children and one for my wife & I. My 4 year old son has thus far managed to memorise all the pin codes I have tried on their Home User login. Iām up to I think the 6th pin code. Being able to restrict the kids from being able to access the libraries between 7pm & 7am plus limiting them to say 5 episodes of cartoons or 2 movies per day would be a huge help. If need be I could create a second Home User so both kids have their own logins & then limit each child to 1 movie per day and 2 episodes.
It would be very helpful if devs could get this implemented soon. I understand that this particular request has been kicking around for more than 5 years now so hopefully something will come of it soon.
Cheers to everyone!
Alex, I couldnāt agree more that this could use some āDev Loveā.
This would also help limit how many episodes people can auto-play in a row. Iāve seen logs in the morning with 12 episodes in a row played and then the person goes back 9 episodes and starts watching again the next day because they racked out halfway through episode 3ā¦
Agreed, this is a much needed feature and would be SO helpful.
Anything and everything to help server maintainers in locations with mediocre internet.
This feature suggestion / common sense addition is going to need a lot more attention to break the top 25 on votesā¦
Hi there, just bought lifetime pass and want to restrict my kid who was watching plex at 2am.
I was just looking for something like this. I am able to set lots of restrictions such as library and rating but nothing for a number of items watched, time of day, or total time.
@HK4LifeB - (Setting aside the fact we all wish Plex included it by default)
If youāre technically inclined, thereās Tautulli and JBOPS scripts for Tautulli.
Iād consider the tech skill level required to set up Tautulli āmiddleā, and getting JBOPS limit script parameters just right āmid+ā. Though I donāt limit time (length or day), prior to Plex getting user stream limits, I use Tautulli and jbops killstream.py to kill more than 2 streams from one user. I shared with a person who I didnāt know at the time that they shared thier account with about 10-15 other family members.
Search forums for both if interested. Even after Plex added the dashboard, Tautulli is still my go-to for history and stats.
@JamminR - Does Tautulli work on internal networks? I donāt share my media, I just use Managed Users inside my network on devices like the Xbox & have different libraries available to different users.
It doesnāt care where, but it could adjust for that too if ever wanted.
Plex should implement parental controls. Actually, all streaming media should have this. In this day and age with so much garbage and kids binge watching, we need to put limits on what they are exposed to.
