Data for shows pulling up wrong info

Some of the files when loaded into my PMS it shows as a show that no longer airs or that isn’t the correct file name because I keep my files neatly organized and titled. For example Magnum P.I., the 2018 series that started on September 24th of this year isn’t coming up as that it is coming up as the 1980 series and putting descriptions and episode titles from that show into where it should be showing the titles I have attached to the file. I have tried to edit the data but it won’t change anything but the poster for the show, also tried refreshing metadata and that doesn’t change a thing. Please help me understand why this is happening or how to fix it because I want my data and files to match accordingly so when I discuss a show with someone I know we are seeing or discussing same thing after watching.

Please share your directory structure and file naming.

Make sure you are following Plex’s Media Preparation guidelines. Specifically, Naming ‘Series’ & ‘Season’ Based TV Shows.

If you have to change naming & directory structure, be sure and perform the Plex Dance so Plex will pick up the changes.

I personally don’t know how to answer this question

Ford refers to the most probable cause for your mismatch being poor naming of your episode files and/or folder structure. Including the support articles describing the naming conventions.

If you want to match the 2018 version, make sure to include the year the show first aired in your file names!

Example:

TV Shows ← the folder linked in your tv library
.. > Magnum PI (2018)
.. .. > Season 01
.. .. .. > Magnum PI (2018) - s01e01.ext ← 1st part exactly matching the show name; ext referring to your file extension

But in my directory or file system it goes…
F:/Magnum P.I 2018/Season 1/1 - I Saw the Sun Rise and so on…

And I know once I changed folder name to match year it was released everything got better but also encountering the same issue with another show called Mystery Science Theater 3000 The Return but it’s titling all new shows as old shows from 1988 and I have labeled folders with appropriate year and given episodes correct titles.

As @tom80H was showing

2018-11-23_14-04-16

Ok I don’t get what you mean

What don’t you get?

Should be:
F:/Magnum P.I. (2018)/Season 01/Magnum P.I. (2018) - S01E01 - I Saw the Sun Rise

So I have to change my entire file system structure?

You might get lucky some of the time if not following the Plex naming convention but as you have discovered you are almost guaranteed that at some point you will encounter matching issues for files that do not follow the naming conventions. You can always try the Fix Match option for shows that are not detected correctly but this may not always work.

Actually that probably will not reliably work either. There needs to be a TV directory that then holds the TV shows and it should not be the root directory.
. . . . . . . . .
F:\TV Shows <- The TV library points here
_______ShowName (year)
____________Season 01
__________________ShowName (year) - s01e01 - Optional Name.ext
__________________ShowName (year) - s01e02 - Optional Name.ext
__________________and so on for the shows in season 01
____________Season 02 <- just like Season 01
____________Season 03 <- and so on for each season

____________Season 00 <- or “Specials”
__________________ShowName (year) - s00e01 - Optional name
__________________ShowName (year) - s00e02 - Optional name
__________________and so on for each special

Note: the eXX part of the specials must match EXACTLY what is found in TheTVDB

You can try other setups BUT Plex is very picky about TV show structure and it is best not to fight the great Plexisaurus.

Could someone post an example of what their file system looks like for shows especially on remake shows such as magnum p.i.

how about the screenshot from @johnm_ColaSC above?

My files system for both Magnum P. I. series is exactly like I posted just above with the naming:
For the earlier show the folder is named:
Magnum P I” with no punctuation or date info at all
The files are like:
Magnum PI - s01e03 - China Doll.mp4” Again no date or punctuation except as shown.
For the current show the folder is:
Magnum P.I. (2018)” with the punctuation and date as shown.
and the files are:
Magnum P.I. - s01e02 - From the Head Down.mp4
Also all my season folder use two digit indicators like:
Season 01

I have absolutely no problems with matching.

It should also be noted that I move “Local media assets” below everything else in all my agents to prevent embedded metadata from screwing things up.

When you change anything to fix a match it is a good idea to “Plex dance” the files involved:

1 - Move the media to where Plex cannot see it
2 - Refresh the library
3 - Empty Trash
4 - Clean bundles
5 - Move the series back
6 - Refresh the library

Perform all steps in order and allow each one to finish before starting the next.

Yeah well I have tried changing format of the file save and even gone as far as actually getting what it said it was and data is still incorrect. I am now confused on why it won’t pull everything from my hard drive because I have added new shows to hard drive and it is only showing what is incorrectly entered even with show that it claims it is being in same folder.

Now it is just stacking episodes with different titles and show names in in same location on Plex but none of them shows are the same.

Let’s take a deep breath and give us some screenshots of what you describe as well as the underlying file system / structure.
Your message is not as clear as you might think it is and it’s hard to get your point across the whole number of posts where you add new information without answering to some of the important questions raised before.

Looking forward to fix this with you

So here is what Plex is showing for those shows in their respective folders. with how each of the shows is labeled according to previous posts.

This is how it looks after adding said shows from previous post. It shows only one title and 12 episodes but it should eventually have 4 shows totaling 48 episodes.
