Dealing with 4:3 images

Hello,
I looking to see if there is a way for Plex to keep old TV show images that are in 4:3 aspect ratio as just that & not zoom them in to a 16:9 window & cutting off detail from the top & bottom.

I’ve tried to search the forum but it so unfathomable that I’m going to post here as at least I can post something.

Sorry if I posted in the wrong place but navigating this forum is a nightmare.

If someone could advise that would be great.

Currently I resize 4:3 manually for be 16:9 & I know I could fit the 4:3 in a 16:9 frame & be done with it but why doesn’t Plex just leave them along at 4:3 instead of resizing them?

Thanks for any advice

Thanks,

Also, why is my name showing as Free-Plex_User when I’m a full paid up member?

All official Plex clients do exactly that by default, as long as you store the source files as 4:3 or as 16:9 with black side bars.
Please specifiy which Plex client you are using and a screen shot of an affected video made in a regular desktop video player.

That’s the name you gave yourself as your forum nickname.

Hello Otto,
I’ve changed my username now, thank you.

I wasn’t aware I set it up as such, it’s been a long time since I’ve been using Plex & haven’t really had a reason to come to the forum as it’s all been a very good experience.

I’m very happy with Plex & I’m fully into it now after a few years.

Anyway, The issue isn’t with videos if I understand what you’re saying.

The issue is with 4:3 images for TV show etc.

If you say that this the default then that’s fine but I would like to suggest that Plex just leaves them alone & not have users resize then to 16:9 as it can be tricky to crop the 4:3 image into 16:9 while trying to keep all the info of the image as well.

Thank you for your time

Are you talking about the thumbnail (still) pictures, not the videos themselves?
Then I’m afraid that there is no support for 4:3 thumbnails in Plex. All is standardized to 16:9

Hello Otto,
Yes I’m talking about 4:3 screen grab of the title etc but you’ve answered my question.

I still think it should be an option to select the image you want to save for an old TV slow etc as 4:3 if needed as opposed to having to crop it or put it into a 16:9 frame to make it fit properly.

How hard could that be to do as a lot of us older users have a lot ot TV shows in 4:3 that we can grad a screen shot of the title etc & want to use that as the thumbnail for the episode.

I always have to take a 4:3 image from a screen grab from an old TV show & crop it to 16:9 but sometimes you lose details like text etc as the original is fills the screen.

Thanks again for your time.

That’s what everyone says who wants his particular feature wish become reality.
It is a matter of spending scarce developer hours on features, which potentially only a fraction of users care about.
So far, supporting 4:3 thumbnails has not been planned.

Instead of cropping, you could extend the 4:3 picture to 16:9 by adding margins to the sides. Their color could be either black or an average of the background color of the screenshot/title card.

Hello Otto,
I wasn’t trying to waste anyone’s time but my suggestion still stands.

There are a lot of old TV show etc out there that you can buy & they are in 4:3.

Thank you very much for answering me & I appreciate that.

Thank you & enjoy the weekend if you can

What a weird thread… The desired feature is unavailable, and yet there is no angry ranting? A polite exchange of information took place?! I hope this catches on.
