And is this something that you plan to add as a feature in the edit pane of a movie media file?
I’ve been asking this question for a number of years here to no avail. Could a Plex employee PLEASE address this? Perhaps if you explained the reason that cast pictures are NOT editable, this would illuminate the answer.
Thank you.
Can you explain exactly what you want to accomplish? I don’t think I understand the connection between casting and editing.
I think OP is talking about the cast (Actors) of a movie ?
We fetch our metadata from a bunch of online sources ( See: https://www.plex.tv/blog/pro-week-day-2-adriana/ )
So a way to edit cast pictures, would be to create an account on like tmdb.org and edit the data there.
Then it’ll flow down to watch.plex.tv, and as such, be avail for our agents, that are pulling the data from there, as well as the clients
When that is said, if you “only” want to be able to edit the pictures on your local PMS server, then that would mean we would have to store all that info in your local database => it would explode in size => PMS would be slow
But with above, then yes, it would technically be possible to only store exceptions locally, but would req. a lot of code changes, as well as make the overall respond slower, since we then would have to first check the local database, and if not found there, then go online for the data.
Editing at TMDB is NOT a solution, and by no means a guarantee that what I upload there will be displayed as metadata images on my server. I’ve tried that and run into some snarky moderators who decide WHICH images THEY like. So I (we) are dependent on THEIR whim and preference. MANY MANY cast images are BLANK as well. NOT a fan of that platform. For instance - I edited the profile for actor Tetsuya Watari the other day (bio and a HIGHER res pic than the other 2 that were there). NO flow down after multiple times choosing the proper agents and refreshing my meta data. I’ll say it again - my movie collection is in many ways a tribute to certain genres and actors, and TMDB’s cast meta data is often blank, and frequently IMO insulting to the actors represented (at least in the genre, Hong Kong action films, that comprise a large part of my 1500 movie file collection.
“When that is said, if you “only” want to be able to edit the pictures on your local PMS server, then that would mean we would have to store all that info in your local database => it would explode in size => PMS would be slow”
Disagree with this - we’re both speculating, but Plex could limit the image sizes to be very small (they only are displayed in tiny sizes anyhow on Plex) and certainly a small percentage of users would be interested in doing that anyhow.
Again, your answer and analysis appear to be personal speculation, or do they they reflect Plex’s official, technical response to my post?
I simply expressed my view on it.
I can only suggest, that you create a suggestion for this here, and state a use case so others can vote as well
Thanks - I’ve done that. I’m simply looking for Plex to address this issue definitively, directly and officially.
OK - here’s the solution…but I need to use Emby which allows for searching for Images that reside on their available databases:
when you click the link to search, it returns all available images ON THE selected database (in this case TMDB).
I was able to easily select and download the image which I had uploaded to TMDB.
Why couldn’t Plex do this? There is no issue with storage as you are simply selecting an image on a database
So with a bit more research (support at TMDB), I discovered that what Emby is using above, is a scraper tool that displays all available options at a particular database when a request is made for particular metadata, so that a user can choose which option they like. Plex must be using a scraper tool that relies on the database to make that decision, which in turn relies on USER VOTES (at TMDB). Much like the silly user vote system here for feature requests. I would rather not have my metadata request results, nor possible new features at Plex be governed by a popularity contest or the most “votes” at a forum (not that I believe that Plex cares what people vote for here - rather it’s a distraction to kick the can down the road).
