Create/Update Cast Images

Is there a way to add/modify headshots locally for cast images? I saw a comment somewhere on another post (which I lost track of) where somebody seemed to be saying that they were using local metadata somehow to not only populate cast info for a movie but to also generate cast thumbnail images to appear with the names.

I already know how to add cast info to movies. Subler lets you edit this in the file’s metadata, I do it all the time for home videos and films I’ve edited (I’m a filmmaker). What I’d love is to be able to pair the cast names up with a picture somehow.

If there’s a way to do this already, I’d love to know. If there isn’t a way, I’d like to know too so I can stop checking for options. (I’m not gonna bother posting to Feature Requests about it… seems like theres an awful lot of common-sense requests with tons of upvotes that don’t get so much as a comment from any Plex employees)

I agree that this should be an option, for several reasons:

  1. MP4 tags don’t have a way to specify cast images, so if it’s not available from the metadata provider, where is Plex supposed to get it?

My proposal: handle this much the same way as Posters and Backdrops. I’d like to be able to drag an image onto the gray initials bubble, associating that image with that cast member.

As a refinement, let me do this either globally on a per-movie basis, since “John Smith” isn’t the same person in every movie, but if there is no per-movie data, go with the global value.

  2. Unlike IMDB, TMDB is good about letting anyone edit movies to fix this sort of problem, apparently by running all edits through a moderation layer, but not everything is in TMDB, and not everything that is allowed under their rules should be added. If I have a home movie, why can’t I list the “cast” in the MP4 tags and apply images to those cast members?

  3. Only a relative minority of the cast members cataloged in TMDB have a Wikipedia page or similar from which you can swipe a Creative Commons headshot. If you have an image locally that you’re happy to use for the purpose but which you aren’t comfortable sending to TMDB, why not just set it locally and avoid the legal minefield?
