Defender AV keeps warning Plex Media Player is unsafe

Hi,

I just tried to download Plex Media Player for windows 10 x64. I took the links from the announcement section of this board. I tried several versions but all of them are flagged as bad by Defender AV as soon as it’s downloaded.

I’m using an up to date version of W10 Pro (1909).

Do you know if there’s a plan to avoid this in the near future? Besides, how can you make sure it’s 100% legit and the AV is screaming for no reason?

Cheers

If by “Defender AV” you mean the default “Windows Defender” by Microsoft, then no, I cannot confirm this. I just downloaded the newest PMP release any my Defender did not give an alert.
You might want to trigger a new ‘Search for updates’ in Windows Update.

If “Defender AV” is some 3rd-party software, then you might want to report this as a false-positive to the manufacturer of this AV software.

You can check most download links yourself, by submitting them to https://www.virustotal.com
They check a file with multiple different anti virus engines.

Alright, so I didn’t use the right names. Actually when I download with Firefox, I have no issue at all and when I even launch a scan by Defender AV, it says it’s ok.

So what causes the warning message is actually the… “checker” from Edge (Chromium/beta insider) which I’m using as my main browser for weeks with no problem. I think it’s called smartscreen.

Si at least this post can warn you about something coming and maybe you should proactively check with Microsoft in order to “whitelist” your app just in case.

edit: by the way, Edge (basic) does not warn, I just tried.

If you use beta software, you should be prepared for such occurences.

I totally agree but this build is supposed to be the « RTM » version. It’s been several months since the beta started, I guess you should be ready for it on dev side since this will be on all Windows 10 devices in the world from the next W10 release.

But there are chances smart screen is triggered because the file might be very rare/uncommon. With the time it should be tagged as safe.

Yes, I think this is very likely the root cause.
