Plex Windows App Anti-Virus Warning + Missing License?

I’m attempting to install the Plex Player for windows, as downloaded from https://www.plex.tv/media-server-downloads/#plex-app

Windows Defender soft-blocks it as an unrecognized app. I double checked the source URL and began the install after confirming it was from Plex.tv. However, the first thing that comes up is a license screen where the entire “license” message is “This is an installer created using CPack. No license provided.”

This seems pretty sketchy… No corporation releases software without a license. So I stopped the install.

Was this just a build goof? Or did Plex get hacked?
Thanks.

I just had the same experience. I then forced it to install after multiple warnings, and it installs, but will not run.

That’s just because it is brand-new, so not many other Windows users have it installed. The Defender is sending hashes of the installed apps back to the MS Mothership.
It then follows the simple logic that a rare hash must be suspect.

All virus scanner engines are agreeing that this file is harmless: VirusTotal

I have reported the missing license text.

This was definitely a goof. We’ve addressed and will push out an update.

@jhawkins128_gmail_com, @bigfire we’ve released fixes for the Windows installer’s icon and license in 1.6.3.

The Windows SmartScreen warnings are a separate issue. @OttoKerner’s explanation matches my understanding of the issue. I didn’t see the warning when installing 1.6.3 before release; I believe we’re out of the woods for now.
