Deleted files still show in Plex but as Unavailable and really just want it not to be seen in!

Server Version#: 1.25.5.5492
Player Version#: does not matter the player

When I watch an episode of a tv show I have downloaded I like to delete it as I will never watch it again for the most part. I do this to save space.

Up until recently when I delete the episodes Plex will remove from the database, and it does not show it and if all the episodes are removed (which happens a lot for me) the series is removed.

Now it is showing the series with the episodes that are deleted but does state unavailable when you look at each individual episode.

I have no idea how to resolve this as allow deletions is set as well as automatic scanning.

I did delete one of the shows main folders which was empty and that seemed to force the all the empty series to remove like expected. However, the issue keeps popping up and not sure what to do as I don’t want to have to keep deleting aa active series folder to jump start the expected result.

Any thoughts on this?

You can tell Plex to empty the trash for that library:
â‹® > Manage Library > Empty Trash

If you’re confident that your storage won’t accidentally be disconnected from your server you can also enable Settings > [Server Name] > Library > Empty trash automatically after every scan – this will remove all items from your library if Plex can no longer find them (or the drive) during a scan.

Thank you for responding . . . .

I already have Empty trash automatically after every scan enabled and have tried doing the empty trash but since the server is not registering that the files are deleted hence no trash icon on the series or episode thumbnail, that does not seem like that is the case.

Did you scan your files at some point?
Otherwise Plex might notice the file isn’t available but won’t move them to its trash.

So, I just discovered that on another Plex server I use for another location is doing the same thing however the Series folder is deleted and Plex has not removed the series in the database.

There have been multiple library scans optimized the database and clean bundles and refresh data as well as analysis to see if anything can get Plex to do what it is supposed to do.

So I think there is a new issue that was introduced in the recent updates of the last 2 not sure when the issue started.

Here is a screen shot of the library settings I know you are going to ask yet again

When this happens next, can you please share your server logs and an information what file you had deleted?

Plex Media Server Logs_2022-02-17_09-25-17.zip (1.8 MB)

Here are the server logs . . .
Wet Hot American Summer is the series folder is physically deleted hard drive
Vienna Blood, Beat Bobby Flay, CSI Vegas and a few others have the season folders are deleted but the series folder remains for future episodes.

Any Help or incite is appreciated

Could you share the database of that server… it almost looks like those files got somehow disconnected due to some inconsistency.

Settings > [Server Name] > Manage > Troubleshooting > Download Database

If you don’t want to drop the database here, send it as a private message.

Plex Media Server Databases_2022-02-17_15-03-46.zip (5.5 MB)

Here you go, I have no issue with privacy of a database of tv shows

Thanks. Could you do another scan of that particular library and share a new set of logs once the scan has finished (give it 1-2 extra minutes so everything can settle)?

Just a FYI, due to the weather I won’t be back to the location with this server we are working on till Tuesday the 22nd. The PC is off so as soon as it is on, and I do an update library from the server taskbar icon I will send you new logs.

Sorry for the delay but here are the latest logs . . .
Plex Media Server Logs_2022-02-23_07-52-56.zip (1.7 MB)

These logs are after a latest server update was applied, 1.25.6.5577, and after doing an “update Libraries” activation from the server system tray icon.

with the server change the deleted items from the hard drive are still showing in the plex database.

I hope this helps in figuring out the situation!

I have the same issue… when i replace a file for a better quality… the old file stay in the database but show unavailable

tom80h did you ever review these logs? I am continuing to have tv shows that are deleted to remain in my Plex database and the episodes show as unavailable. If there was a way to show all the episodes that are unavailable so I can easily search for and take care. I can live with that, unless you can find the real reason this is happening.

Sorry, I must have missed that post.
Have you tried manually deleting the items from Plex (after enabling Settings > [Server Name] > Library > Allow media deletion)?

I can manually delete and allow media deletion is set to yes and automatically emptying trash is on.

Is it possible that you have added more than one folder location to your library?
And if so, that at least one of these folders is either

  • no longer existent
  • not accessible
  • completely empty

?

Only one folder Location . . . and it exists and is not empty

Is this the affected folder?

Verify this folder is still present.
Check the hard drive for errors (CHKDSK)
Perform a surface test of the drive (CHKDSK /r)

This morning I went back in to plex and re looked at what tom80h asked and for some reason I was overlooking the folder that I had removed some time ago from the library setup. Once I removed it everything was working as the already physically deleted files were removed from the plex database including some items I did not realize were hanging around still.

Thank you for the help!
