Deleting Downloads Deletes from Server

Server Version#: 1.27.2.5929
Player Version#: ? - latest on app store for iPad

I have noticed if I delete a download on the iPad it is removed from my media server in Plex. The file remains on my drive but is no longer shown in Plex.

This does not sound like the intended behaviour.

This should help run down your delete settings

Delete Item with a Plex App

It’s possible to directly delete an item from within most Plex apps if you’ve enabled the ability to do so. Be very careful with enabling and using this ability.

Warning!: Deleting an item this way will immediately remove it from your library and will also delete the corresponding media file. This will usually place it in your operating system’s Recycle Bin or Trash, but it could immediately and permanently delete the item from your disk.

Enable Deletion

To start, you’ll have to make sure that the ability to delete media is enabled for your Plex Media Server. This an advanced option is found under Settings > Server > Library.

So yes. I do have allow delete turned in on in the server. However why would deleting a “download” on a mobile device cause it to delete from the server.

I’m not deleting it by navigating to the media server kind you. I’m deleting it from the downloads section.

And if that’s the expected behavior then how do you remove the download from the mobile device?

I would disallow delete on the server. That way nothing you do thru PLEX and its various apps would be able to delete. If you do wish to delete, then you could delete the file on the server/NAS/HDD directly. I’ve never allowed PLEX to delete as a safeguard.

So disallowing delete prevents this from happening. However I think this is faulty behavior. Deleting a download should not delete the original file from the server.

Thanks for talking this through.

This seems like a bug, or at least an overlooked function that was improperly implemented. If Plex intends to delete a library item that, basically you have borrowed for local playback, when you delete that file, the app should give you the choice to remove it from the server, otherwise you should be able to delete it without touching the library. Plex is treating the download as if you have taken it out, rather than borrowed it. I don’t think a download should be connected with the library entry, in that only going to the library entry should be where a delete occurs, not a downloaded file. Plex needs to separate these and not treat them the same. I think this is worth reporting as a bug, an issue, a problem, a feature request, etc.
