Detailed Questions about qnap ts-453bt3 & PMS

Hey guys,

Server Version#: 1.14.0.5470

I have had qnap ts-453bt3 with:
8GB RAM
3 HGST 8TB SATA 7200RPM NAS Internal Drives
1 Samsung 850 EVO 500GB

QUESTIONS:

  1. As it’s being used for Plex and Media serving, will adding M.2 NVMe into the mix for caching purposes do anything for Plex?
  2. Or instead of M.2 NVMe, I should upgrade the ram to 16GB?

Thanks in advance for help! Happy Holidays!

I have:

  1. 2x M.2 1TB SATA-3 (what this unit uses) , Mirror RAID (1), as CACHEDEV1_DATA (PMS and all apps live here)
  2. Main HD array as CACHEDEV2_DATA
  3. A couple of 2.5" SSDs for development (i sometimes migrate PMS to the SSD)

All my drives are the WD Red Pro 8TB (which are really HGST in a WD suit)

Be advised:

A long standing QNAP performance issue exists with caching. QNAP Is migrating away from SSD cache in favor of QTIER.

I"ve just finished battling it myself. My solution was to turn down the cache: to Read-Only and use 256KB block sizes. This allows directories and small files to cache but media files stay out of it. Caching directories quiets the hammering when PMS is scanning quite nicely.
