Cachedev offers un-updated data when searching to add to Library

Hi there, my first post and after searching the forum and internet without success in addressing this issue.

On a Qnap TS-873, when I add Library, the search for the directory offers up cachedev that is wrong or un-updated. How can I ensure the cache is updated with the latest from Qnap’s File Station?

Thank you.

/share/CACHEDEVx_DATA is the actual volume where your media is stored. If the data you’re looking for isn’t there, something is wrong.

However, I get the impression you’re using the MultiMedia share because you’re talking about it not being updated. If this is true, If you are, you respectfully need to get away from using the multimedia share while you can.

The reason you need to get away from it is because Multimedia is an Application-Generated share. You aren’t seeing ‘truth’ . You’re seeing what the application wants you to see when it wants you to see it. As a direct result, it will drive PMS crazy.

If I may recommend taking some time to read the QNAP FAQ. It’ll save you a lot of time and headaches.

Next, the TL;DR, start creating actual shares for your media (typically by type “movies”, “television”, “music”, etc), moving your files into those shares, and then having PMS look directly at those shares. After doing this, you won’t have any latency when adding media. PMS will see it immediately.

We have a dedicated QNAP forum (tag) server-qnap where you’ll find all kinds of info as well as read about the issues others have had and how they solved them

Hi ChunkPA, never expected such a quick response. Much appreciated

Anyway, its a dedicated vol rather than the Multimedia.

This is the correct folder :
cachedev7_data

This also showed up :
cachedev4_data

Cachedev4 happen to be an earlier configuration that I’ve deleted after getting more familiar with Qnap Plex.

How can I get rid of the obsolete ones if they do not update automatically?

Thanks very much.

Ok… NOW I understand.

I have a TVS-1282. I have the M.2 SSD’s as CACHEDEV1, Main array as CACHEDEV2, and the 2.5" drives are 3 & 4 respectively.

If you brought over as singles and didn’t import that, that’s not something I’m comfortable telling you how to do because if done incorrectly, the volumes become ‘unmounted’ and or lost because they exist as logical volumes which get mounted as CACHEDEV directories.

QNAP helped me (Teamviewer session) and it took about 10 minutes.

That’s the easiest and safest thing to do.

Is it possible for you to get all over your data on the CACHEDEV volumes (1-4) you want to keep?

If you can get it all in one place, I think storage manager will let you delete 6-7-8-9 and then you can add them to the storage pool.

We can ask @dane22 (our qnap expert) or you can give QNAP a call (if possible for you). QNAP folks are good. I trust them. I’ve worked with them a fair amount already.

Hi ChuckPA, I read about and am interested in getting M.2 as another set of storage pool. I thinking of getting a 1Tb to start with. I held back because I’m not certain of the benefits M.2 would bring to my box.

With the M.2, since there would be a migration/import process, I only need to migrate those that I need and perhaps rename the cachedev__ simultaneously. Would this be possible?

Warm Regards,
Sam

Sam,
Installing the M.2 puts the QTS apps on that volume (CACHEDEV1_DATA) . Plex gets instantly faster. If you do this. I would recommend the appropriate Samsung 860 SATA-3 (??) for your machine. I don’t think yours supports NVME (which would then handle the 960 NVME)

The key to getting your volumes consolidated / reduced is first getting the data all in one spot. This is probably going to take some moving / shuffling around. You may have to move it all to “one side” while you build what you want. After you build as much as you can, you move the data onto that new area so you can free up and then add those now-empty CACHEDEV devices

See what I’m doing? piece it together. as you collect the pieces (media) in one spot, you can add the other drives to that bigger volume and make it bigger still. IF this is what you want.

Hi ChuckPA, I have backed up all the data. I have also just placed an order for the Samsung evo 860 1TB m.2 from B+H Photo.

Now that I’m pretty sure how I can organise the data, I can afford to wipe everything and have the Qnap reinstalled to start over.

I will consult (you) further when I receive the m.2.

Warm Regards,
Sam

Hi ChuckPA,

I have 2 x 1tb M.2 for the 2 slots in TS-873 (to be configure Raid1). There are also 8x8tb hdd as a single storage pool.

Should I configure the M.2 for cache or as another storage pool to house the Qnap system? Or is it possible to have both functions for the M.2.

My main use of TS-873 is for storage of documents and to run Plex Media Server. I have not yet advanced to the other functions such as VM.

Your advice greatly appreciated.
Sam
