Server Version#: 1.25.6.5577
Player Version#: Plex Client on Roku
I’ve been accessing Plex Server running on my Windows 7 PC using Plex Client on a Roku, and it has worked perfectly. This is for direct Ethernet connections on my LAN (ie not remote access).
I rebooted my Win 7 PC to see if this cured frequent “buffering” problems (rotating cursor on a %age complete) when playing off-air HD recordings. And I found that after that, any attempt to play a HD recording (1920x1080x25 H264 TS file) displayed the picture in standard definition, and on closer inspection the client was reporting that it could not connect directly and was imposing a 1 Mbps data limit because it was going via the internet and Plex’s servers.
Looking at plex.tv/relay, the symptom is described as " Note : It’s important to understand that if you’re connecting via “Relay”, then it means that your app was unable to make a direct connection to your Plex Media Server. A direct connection will always give you the best experience; see below for information."
It would be useful if this help page explained how to remedy the situation and to troubleshoot why the client is no longer able to access the server directly when this has always worked in the past.
The steps that fixed the symptom for me were to try (in turn):
- stop and restart Plex Server on the Win 7 PC
- exit Plex Client on Roku and re-enter it
- power Roku off and on
It was the last action which fixed it (if it hadn’t, my next action would have been to reboot the Win 7 PC, which is a pain as it takes about 15 minutes to shut down and restart).
If the plex.tv/relay page had given a checklist of likely causes, in “try this first” order, I’d have saved myself a bit of time.
Should Plex Client on Roku be able to cope with the situation where the server PC is rebooted, or is it a known restriction that the Roku should be rebooted if the Plex Server is rebooted?
