DIfference between documentaries and documentary films

It seems Plex takes a hard line between what is a Documentary and what is not. A single documentary video is apparently Film, whereas multiple Documentary videos under the same banner come under TV Shows.

A documentary having a single episode should not make it a film!!!

Because of this, it is impossible to have multi-episode and single-episode documentaries in the same library. This seems absurd - or am I missing something?

You certainly aren’t, unless Im missing something also. Lol.

You can create separate libraries and do it that way but ya… Im with ya.

The „missing link“ in your interpretation seems to be the fact that a single-episode documentation (or other film/video…) isn’t episodic content. Therefore the common online databases don’t treat them as tv shows but as movies.

Documentaries have a maybe unique place in this - in the big venn diagram of video content they intersect with both films and TV series, in the factual set. Grouping all documentaries together has clear benefits and I’m surprised this isn’t supported.

In any case I have worked out a solid fudge. Just stick S00E01 into the filename and the “film” will be treated like a TV series, although you do have to enter your own tags. Not the end of the world.
