clarification: “external IP address” should be 0.0.0.0
If your Plex server does not yet have a fixed IP address, I recommend assigning one now. If the IP address changes after creating the rule, Remote Access will cease working.
Reference: https://www.motorolacable.com/documents/MG7540-UserManual.pdf
Page 27 (you can also search for “Forward”) . Actually on page 28.
Assuming the IP is fixed.
- Local IP address = IP address of Plex server
- Start port = 32400
- End port = 32400
- Protocol = TCP
- External should work with 0.0.0.0 ( Read further in the manual please)
- decide on the external port number you want to use.
- Assuming also “32400”
- External section: Start port 32400
- External section: End port: 32400
- Protocol : TCP
- Description: Plex Remote Access rule
- Enable.
It should offer to save (i don’t see that in the manual)
Go to Plex:
Settings - Server - Remote Access
If Enabled then disable.
Enable,
Let it it fault once.
It will come back and allow you to “Manually specify port”.
Enter “32400”
Retry / save (I forget … mine is automatic )

Thank you for being willing to help!
what should I be looking for/at please?
I don’t know. I am unable to get either PMS or the server to display just about anything. I constantly get “unable to reach the server” messages when the server is on the very computer that I am using. I can access the server from mobile devices, but not from the very PC in which it resides. Rarely do I get a connection. When I do the message is that the connection is indirect.
Does that help?
In the same sequence as above,
1 Wired or WiFi ?
2. What are the IP addresses of the Server and the computer you’re attempting to access it from (let’s get one thing working first) ?
- Wired
- I don’t know. I haven’t been able to get the server software to give me a connection for the last two days after many, many, many attempts. For awhile it had been difficult. Now, it seems, it is impossible. The ridiculous thing is that I can access the server remotely through any and all my outside devices (Roku, iPads and phones). However, the very PC the server resides on still is giving me fits. I’m sorry it has taken awhile to get back with you. I’ve been waiting to get a connection to find my IP addresses, but to no avail.
Go to the server and
- Stop PMS
- Manually make a ZIP or
tar.gzof the PlexLogsdirectory - Attach it.
I found this thread:
It looks as though my problem may have been solved. I will be back to let you know if I am consistently able to access the server from my desktop pc. If the problem persists, I’ll also let you know. Disabling the Xfinity protection as mentioned in the above thread seems to have solved the problem, though.
If this is the solution I want to thank you for putting the time in to help me!!!
