Hey all, just looking for advice on why my files are buffering while direct playing at my cousins house. My Plex server is installed on a windows PC running an i5 2500k w/ 16gb ddr3 Ram. My isp is 1000/30. My cousins isp is 500/20 and he is using an nvidia shield.
The file is a 1080p bluray remux… with atmos… about 35gb. He is getting the file to direct play but it buffers every min and half. 31.3bit rate.
The size of the file does not matter. The bitrate matters.
On the Shield, sort the library by bitrate (one of the sort choices - name, date added, etc)…
Alternately, login via Plex Web and check the movie’s bitrate via Get Info.
If the bitrate is anywhere close to 30 Mbps, then you’re pushing your luck. The listed rate is an average. Parts of the movie will be higher and lower than the rate shown on the screen.
Realize you’re at the mercy of the Internet with remote streaming. You’re competing for bandwidth with all folks streaming Netflix, Amazon Video, Twitch, etc. There is no quality control or prioritization. A 30 mbps uplink is no guarantee you can stream a 30 mbps video to your cousin’s house with a 500 mbps downlink. There could be dozens of potential congestion points between the two locations.
Yeah you’re upload is really on the edge for remuxes. It’s all I collect too.
You could either create optimised versions for streaming to your friends.
Or as I prefer to do depending on your CPU/ GPU just let them transcode (the picture quality is excellent via quicksync) and set a suitable upload limit in the server settings.
If you really need to retain the HD audio whilst streaming then your only option would be to handbrake the files I think.
