Plex or internet?

I am using windows 7; i5-3570 3.40ghz with 16gig RAM, OS on 1tb SSD.
Internet speed: DL: 476.24 UP: 23.62
4 Roku ultras ; ethernet connected
had this same setup for about 3years now.

Have 5 remote users. All with no issues for the last 3 years. Last week my internet went down for 15mins.
NOW each of them are getting PLAY BACK ERRORS or so mucg buffering it not worth using.
The only issue I have been having is slow loading of MOVIES, but no buffering.

The question is… it it software/hardware or internet related??
How can I tell??

Symptoms could be coincidental… with a 24 Mbps upload, this could easily be a bandwidth problem that simply hasn’t materialized before if you didn’t have the concurrent streams.

While the i5-3570 is old, it used to be a strong CPU that should still deal fine with up to 3 transcodes… you might want to keep an eye on the streaming preferences of those friends… if there’s a lot unnecessary transcoding, that could certainly impact their streaming experience.

OK… I have seen ALOT of transcoding… i know that they use Roku and smartTV
with the rokus. i knwo the remtoe quailty if 4mbs 720p, direct play AUTOa dn direct stream checked. been those settings for years.
On my end.the server side…
Transocder quality is automatic
Use hardware acceleration when available, checked
Use hardware-accelerated video encoding, checked
Maximum simultaneous video transcode is 3
I do have the plex pass
remote access:
No upload speed set
Limit remote stream bitrate is no limit
also same settings for years

I have been experiencing the same.
I am remotely connected to my PMS, a custom speed test from my PMS to my location results in more than 40Mbps available. Still, Plex cannot direct play a 2mbps file. Constant buffering using iPad as a player.
I am now positive something broke in one of the latest PMS releases.

I am tempted to re-install everything, but I dont think its my setup…I believe it either plex ont he backend OR somewhere Spectrum internet has a bad routing table

What information is showing in the “now playing” tile for the playback of your friends on the Plex server dashboard?
Exemplary screenshot from the "now playing" section

Focus points:

  • remote vs indirect/relayed streaming
  • transcoding vs. direct play/stream

then it goes to…

Thier internet speed is 70mbps DL

In my case it’s always direct playing because I disabled transcoding as it should not be needed for a 2Mbps file.
The problem is that the player (Plex on iPad) buffers too slowly and it does not keep up. When I add the debug overlay it clearly shows that it buffers the first 10 seconds and then when playback starts it cannot keep up and when the cache gets to zero playbacks stop and it takes longer than 1x to buffer. When pausing the video I can see that the buffering speed is 60/90 kbps instead of the full bandwidth available.
It’s like if the PMS believes there is not enough bandwidth (my limit is set at 90Mbps but I also tried with 0).

This seems to be related or the same issue.

I have rolled back at least 5 updates… still same issues
