Direct streaming

Hi,

I was wondering how difficult it would be to have native chrome cast + airplay support in plexserver.

I currently have several airport expresses and a chrome cast gadget.... which is great almost got ride of the PC in the living room and its associated noise..

the drawbacks are

1) that airplay can only be started/controlled from an iOS device

2) chromecast once started can't only be controlled by the device that initiated it

3) in plex web, chrome cast only works from within google chrome browser.

4) airplay can only be played to one device at a time.. when the protocol does allow multiple receivers.

if the support was built into plex server itself then any device could be used to pause / play even if another started it..

airplay could be to multiple rooms, kind of like how iTunes works with airplay..

I feel like this would work much smoother... any other opinions?

#1 Airplay is a Apple owned technology, only apple can change that

#2 is not true. you can cast from and android phone to chrome cast. disconnect while it is still playing then reconnect with Plex/Web or iOS and take over control. i have done this many times.

#3 is because the casting API made by google only works with Chrome, iOS and Android. it is not some arbitrary limitation the Plex devs decided on. google is the only one that can change that

BTW I don't mean to say that it is not an interesting idea. Just pointing out a few things

I understand that it would take quite a bit of effort to implement this, and yes I'm not extremely familiar with the specifics of the underlying technologies.  I was also just giving examples relating to my set up, and how the experience could be more integrated....and as i've not got android I can't comment on that.

I've tried taking control of chrome cast from a non initiating device and it just stops playback.  does it from iPad to iPhone to chrome web.  Goes via the ready to cast screen so i think it just prepares the chromcast to receive fresh content, stopping what is playing already.

I'm familiar with airfoil, so I thought that if 3rd party software exists, which it does, then plex could implement that to stream to an airport.  As for chrome cast I'm sure it will be possible for someone to eventually figure out the command that is sent to the chrome cast to play a stream from plex....

There is a new project that allows command line streaming to chromecast...  This could be integrated into plex...

I doubt very much Plex would implement some third party implementation for casting.
