Directory structure and naming convention

Server Version#:4,45,0
Player Version#: Chrome for OS X
I am in the process of uploading a bunch of mp3’s (Radio dramas) to my plex server. I’ve been following the directions here https://support.plex.tv/…/200265296-adding-music-media…/ and have the “prefer meta data preferences” turned off.

Here’s the directory structure

/plex/Media/Radio Dramas/13th Juror/13th Juror

3 - Theodosia Burr.mp3

4 - Prospectus.mp3

5 - John Wilkes Booth.mp3

1 - ! Play First.mp3

2 - Music Cues by Morton Glickman.mp3

It’s picking up the Artist as 13th Juror (expected) and Album as 13th Juror (expected). But the tracks are numbering 0-4 instead of 1-5, and the track names are all 13th Juror.

/plex/Media/Radio Dramas/ is the library top.

Am I doing something wrong?

try looking/editing the metadata… i know you said you have the setting off, but i think it looks at SOME metadata for searching, labeling, n such.

Thanks, yeah, it looks like that’s it, unfortunately my Picard for OSX by Musicbrainz doesn’t seem to have scripting in the OPtions menu, or in the help file. But at least I have something to track down and try. I’m going to strip all the mp3 tags off the files using a stripper and see if that works. (I’ve got a backup just in case)

yep… oops i didn’t mean to link to that scripting comment, just to the how to entirely…
you don’t need a stripping tool picard will do it. look at these settings.

Tags (check the following)

  • Write tags to files
  • clear existing tags

that should get you what you need. if plex isn’t picking up the changes right away, try the plex dance.

i figured he named his media share ‘plex’ to be organized… my plex directory on linux is plexmediaserver… nowhere just has plex as a folder name…

OH SNAP! i didn’t realize they are structured differently on other environments pff
but YES TOTALLY AGREE with you!

I’m sorry for the confusion the Plex share on Synology has caused.

I only made it visible so you can

  1. Get log files if PMS ever failed to start
  2. Effect repairs of the database
  3. Make backups of the metadata

Here’s the (hope of some) sanity

  1. On Linux it’s /var/lib/plexmediaserver/Application Support/Plex Media Server
  2. On Mac it’s ~/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server
  3. On Synology it’s /volume1/Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server

I placed it in a shared folder on the first volume (/volume1) so that will persist if you ever have need to uninstall the package.

As it turns out, given Synology does not let us downgrade, the only method available to effect a downgrade is Uninstall-Reinstall lower version.

One common element in all *Nix OS’s – if any media gets in near the metadata, chaos ensues because the chance of error is extremely high.

We have plans for changing how this all operates in DSM 7 but have not yet solidified that implementation layout.

We will migrate installations from DSM 6 → DSM 7 when the time comes.
