Disable/Hide Live TV?

How can I disable/hide the [relatively] new Live TV item from the menu on ALL of my clients for ALL of my users? I have exactly ZERO interest in the feature and its similarity to the Live TV & DVR function confuses my clients. Is this one of those “that’s the price you pay” things and we are not allowed to choose whether to see the menu option or not?

I have been through all of the (advance) settings screens for my server and the closest thing I can find is the “Personalize” option for the menu item for a particular user. The best I could do with that was to hide every channel one at a time! and then when Live TV is selected, it tells me the guide is empty and recommends I go to the DVR settings, providing this link DVR Settings that took me to a totally blank Plex page.

Please tell me how to completely get rid of this unwanted feature!

You can disable it for yourself and your managed users in Settings>Online Media Sources.

Online Media Sources is a feature of Plex that is available to everyone who has their own account. It has nothing to do with your server, and it’s not something that you share with them. Just like you can’t control someone else’s Player settings or Network settings, you can’t control whether they have the Online Services enabled/disabled.

Nope. That doesn’t help. I’ve had that disabled since it was added:

If I have a setting here wrong and I am allowing Live TV to be shown on my library panel, please let me know what and how to correctly set it.

You can’t.
You can only do that for your own and for pure “managed” users.
As described above.
This should remove the medias source for you and your managed users.

However, as mentioned already, if you share with users who have their own plex.tv account, they have to do that themselves. Since this is directly from plex.tv and has nothing to do with your own server.
Tell them to log in to plex.tv with their own credentials and then go to https://app.plex.tv/desktop#!/settings/online-media-sources

Sorry, I wasn’t clear. All of the users I’m concerned about are managed. I cannot hide the Live TV option for my MASTER account, let alone for any of the managed users. I posted a screen shot of the settings I’ve been told should hide it, but nothing seems to hide or even disable it. I asked earlier if I had not done the settings correctly or if there are other settings I need to use, but have not received an answer to that question, yet (I hope.)

If they are using their own account, they are on their own. That’s only my sister and she almost never access my system anyway (she has her own.)

Could you show a screenshot, of how Live TV is still showing for you?
Is it only in the side bar?
Or also on the home page?

Are we talking about a particular client type or several/all of them?

huh?

click the drop down to disable it for YOURs and your managed users

@TeknoJunky THANKS! That is the setting I could not see.

I think that the similarity between “Live TV & DVR” (something I use often) and “Live TV” confused me. Especially since “Live TV & DVR” automatically fetches Guide Data from on line sources, I did not want to accidentally disable that feature.

Perhaps the Plex developers can invent some more distinct names for these so they are not so easily confused? For example:

Live TV & DVR ==> Antenna TV & DVR
Live TV ==> Streaming TV

Personally, I find both of those more descriptive (since they both get live tv, identifying the source is important.)

Anyway, thanks again and sorry I was confused by two things with virtually identical names.

I agree, that the terminology used for the plex services are a bit too similar to, and easily confused with, user/server supplied sections/content.

you can control the ‘live tv and dvr’ for your users on the users & sharing page > user > restrictions

Agreed. I was particularly surprised when they renamed ‘Tidal’ to ‘Music,’ when the default name for a personal Music library is ‘Music.’

Keep in mind that the section those are listed under is “Online media sources”. Your TV/DVR on PMS is not online. Maybe this should be:

Online Media Sources (not from PMS)

Well, I managed to get it hidden from the web player, but it still shows on my FireTV’s Plex app. When I selected it, I just got a big black expanse where the guide would’ve been because I hid every channel, but I could see and was allowed to select “Live TV” on the FireTV app. Oh, and I am logged in using the master account, if that matters. Perhaps it is not possible to hide things from the owner? Or are there additional settings (beyond those listed above) that are required to hide this fore the FireTV app?

You should be able to hide the entire section. Did you change the setting in Plex Web? Your earlier screenshot showed it was disabled for managed users, that means it’s enabled for the admin. You need to set it to disabled to disable it for the admin.

Everything on the Online Media Sources page shows as Disabled.

I just went to double-check and when I turned the FireTV on, there was a notification of a system update that included a reboot. I believe I have read that when the FireTV restarts, it automatically updates any apps that need one and…

Live TV is no longer visible on the FireTV Plex app. Apparently my app was out of date (or perhaps just doesn’t bother to get the current settings from the server very often?)

Interestingly, the empty Plex item has also been removed from the side bar (assuming it was there before) but it remains in the web app.

I think I figured something out: The apps don’t get.check any configuration while they remain running. I was wrongly assuming that because things appear to reload every time I enter and leave a library that the app was actually updating things like the side bar at that time. But when I checked the app on a Roku where it had been active since before I disabled the setting, Live TV was still present. Exiting to the Roku main menu and re-selecting the Plex app showed that the Live TV item was now no longer present.

Since I almost never exit the Plex app on my Roku, I would not have noticed if the setting was working because it is ignored until the app is restarted. Sorry. If someone told me that, I completely missed it. Thanks for your patience and assistance!

Ok that’s it. Your account settings are not checked all the time like it checks your server. For apps this is checked when the app starts so if you leave the app on the Fire TV running, it won’t update this information. For Web, you can do a refresh and it will recheck your account info.

That’s doesn’t work for the FireTV though, because EVERY time I power it on, it has returned itself to the main menu and I must select and start the Plex app again. It appears that the “soft” power off command is an implicit ‘exit-to-main-menu’ command as well, at least on my Toshiba’s FireTV implementation. This probably explains why I didn’t see any change until I forced the TV to completely reboot.

It does work for the Roku, though. As for the checks, it seemed obvious that the server would send user account changes just like any other media updates to the clients, but I guess the developers didn’t think that was a worthwhile use of their time when [annoyed comment removed]

Yeah, Amazon’s Fire OS doesn’t close apps when you hit the home button. Another option is to turn off the auto sign in, then you will be required to reselect your user when turning the app on and this will also check your account for updates.

I am running Version 1.20.1.3252 on a Windows 10 box. I have one master account. Live TV is available on the menu of my Android app. On my plex server, when I log in and go to account -> online media sources, i have no option for “live tv”. there are only options for only movies & tv, web hows, news, podcasts and music (which, btw, are all disabled).

I’ve tried shutting down the service and restarting. i’ve checked for an update. nothing. and no option appears to disable live TV. i want to disable it for all logins of my master account (ps4, xbox, android app, etc.).

Any ideas?

Thank you! I was able to find the “Live TV” option and disable it by navigating to the URL you indicated. This has also caused the “Live TV” link to disappear from my Plex Android app’s menu option.

Thank you again!
