I have a server and share the content of it with a few friends. I have a ton of 4K, and my Synology can barely transcode those files, so Ive turned transcoding off entirely. This presents a problem when Im trying to run Live TV. When streaming live channels to my iPhone, it will direct stream and work fine, but when I stream live channels to my Samsung TVs, apparently it needs to transcode.
Transcoding these 1080p TV streams is no sweat for my Syno, but I really dont wanna open up for everyone to transcode.
Please, either set an exception for owner and managed users to the disable transcoding rule, or an exception to live TV, since the live TV feature seem to demand transcoding being turned on for it to work properly.
Why not tag your 4K video’s and block those tags from being accessed for your remote users. You could also create optimized lower resolution videos, then limit the remote video quality to the lower resolution video so that will be played instead of the 4K version.
None of them need to transcode but some do by mistake
Plex clients sometimes revert to 3 mbps 720p remote streaming when updated
PGS subbs dont play nice with Samsung. If a user doesnt know, he/she will not search for SRT to omit transcoding
There are several reasons for why a transcode may be triggered and I simply want to prevent that from happening except when I or my managed users watch Live TV. Preventing my users from seing 4K content all together or converting my entire library to a lower quality none of my users really need really isnt an option.
I guess I could buy Apple TVs across the board and turn transcoding off again but I kind of like the Samsung client and not needing external devices.
Yep. Should be pr. user really. Id take exception for admin and managed users though. Second server is a bit to much imo. If Plex doesnt improve on this, Im leaning more towards getting better clients, and shutting transcoding back off
Yea, I know about the tautuli options. Im just not a huge fan of adding a bunch of additional apps to get features I believe should be native in the first place but I guess this could be a good option
