Disappearing Extras

Server Version#:1.17.0.1709
Player Version#:

All the movie extras from a new bluray initially appeared as thumbnails in Plex Media Server, which is located on my Synology NAS. However, after I renamed the fourth extra file from a dummy file name to the correct file name, ALL of the thumbnails disappeared from Plex Media Server. I have rescanned my files many times, but this has not caused the missing extras files to reappear. FWIW, I ripped two other blu-rays minutes before ripping this one without having any problem with the extras files.

The same thing happened moments ago with another bluray rip.

I remember one time I fat-fingered a tag like this:
Something, Something-Behindthescenes.mkv <—case sensitive
and it killed every extra in the folder.

Also, if you have versions of movies in different resolutions (for instance), ya gotta do this:

Extras that appear, then disappear rings a loud bell - 'cause that’s exactly what happens…

If either of those two things don’t apply - disregard.

Thanks for the reply. I am upgrading some of my movies from DVD to Blu-Ray, but before ripping the Blu-Rays, I moved the DVD files to an area of the NAS that does not get scanned by Plex.

As a guestimate, more than half of my movies have one or more extra features. My normal naming convention is to use Name0x-featurette.mkv (x starts at 1) until I am able to see what each file contains. Then, I give each file a name that makes sense to me. FWIW, I ripped two more Blu-Rays today. The first movie still has no thumbnails in Plex, but the second movie does. Regarding that second movie, two of the thumbnails wouldn’t play properly in Plex, so I used my Blu-Ray player to see what those files contain. After giving each thumbnail its final name, both played in Plex, too.

A’ight.

Well, just as a test and as my parting shot, when you move things out of Plex’s View, Empty Trash and Clean Bundles (in case you haven’t been). Plex is quite finicky about Extras and their being associated with the very first version you have.

If you Clean Bundles after dumping the trash, Plex will have no reason to think the version you add won’t be a brand new one, with a brand new bundle, one you can write Extras into… if you know what I mean.

I went through all the Plex settings. I already had checked the Local Media Assets boxes for movies and shows. I also clicked on Optimize and Clean Bundles. The recycle bin on the NAS is empty, and so is the one on my Mac. Did I miss a Trash function somewhere else?

The DVD version of one of the movies I’m replacing did not have any extras files. The extras files that came with the Blu-Ray version of that movie will NOT play. The DVD version of a second movie has extras files. I was able to copy them to the folder containing the Blu-Ray version without any problem. What drives me nuts is getting inconsistent outcomes even though I name the extras files the same way each time.

FYI, I upgraded the PMS before beginning the ripping process yesterday.

When I moved the extras files from the two problem movie folders to a third movie’s folder, they played properly and, thus, I was able to rename them. However, all of the extras thumbnails ceased appearing when I moved the extras files back to their correct movie folders. FYI, I tried moving those extras files to a few other movie folders before I found one that allowed me to see the thumbnails. In some cases, the pre-existing thumbnails associated with those other movie folders disappeared until I removed the extras files in question. This is very strange!

Hi, trumpy81,

Unfortunately, Plex Dance didn’t help.

Here’s a screenshot of my files for The Apartment and The Awful Truth. The thumbnails for The Apartment appeared as usual until I changed the name of a few files from a dummy name to a useful name. These thumbnails no longer appear under The Apartment. When I relocated these files to the folder for The Awful Truth today, the thumbnails appeared under The Awful Truth and played properly. Before testing The Awful Truth, I relocated these files to a couple other movie folders, and another strange thing happened. The thumbnails for The Apartment not appear when I clicked on the other movie, and the thumbnails associated with that other movie disappeared until I removed the files for The Apartment from the other movie’s folder.

Months ago, one of your colleagues suggested that I reformat my movie files either as shown below or as follows. Create a Featurettes subfolder under the movie file. Add all extras files to that Featurettes subfolder, but do not include the suffix “-featurette" in the file name. I tried this approach today, but it didn’t work either.

I really appreciate your help.

The Apartment:
You have items in that folder that are NOT Extras and are NOT the Movie.

The Awful Truth:
You have items in there that are named ‘like’ a movie, but have an Extra Tag. Let’s try not to confuse Plex if we can prevent it.

  1. the only things that can go in that folder are The Movie and The Extras and The Subs. That’s it.

  2. If you want these Extras to work you MUST start with a fresh bundle. That means before you add a Folder with the Movie and The Extras you’d better remove all other Versions and Clean Bundles before you add anything back to the server - to make sure there are no other bundles belonging to that Movie. Extras work for ONE Movie, The First Time you add it. If you’re adding a Movie for the SECOND time you better make sure Plex thinks it’s the Virgin Voyage for that Movie or this stuff simply won’t work.

  3. You can work with Versions, providing you place an original Version with Extras FIRST. Detailed explanation in the link provided above and below. You can ONLY have one Version of a Movie with Extras, meaning after placing the First Movie with Extras, any other version can NOT have Extras. If you want to add more Extras to a ‘Set’ of Movies - Start Over.

  4. Normally if I am ‘upgrading’ an item I will just name it the same and replace the item by copying right on top of it - then analyzing when done (just to make sure). IF I’m upgrading a Movie that has Extras, the original version is REMOVED from the server, the trash is emptied and the bundles are cleaned before adding it’s upgrade and Extras back to the server.

This link explains in painful detail was has to happen and the order it has to happen in:

You get one shot at this. If you don’t do it right - do it over.

You can get this to work.
It is kinda a PITA until you learn the rules.
If you play by the rules the rewards are fairly obvious:

(Third time for The Big Sleep - two operator error sessions many years ago and very recently due to a Library Re-Build, but with so much experience previously, fixing that this last time was a walk in the park…)

Good morning, JuiceWSA,

I really appreciate your trying to help me solve this problem. I’m going to respond to your points as best I can.

“The Apartment:
You have items in that folder that are NOT Extras and are NOT the Movie.”

Every file in that folder contains a video. I didn’t know what two of the videos contained until this morning when I played the disk in my Blu-Ray player, so they had dummy names yesterday. As it turns out, each file contains a scene of the film with a commentary by a film historian, so I have renamed those two files accordingly.

“The Awful Truth:
You have items in there that are named ‘like’ a movie, but have an Extra Tag. Let’s try not to confuse Plex if we can prevent it.”

This folder contains one audio file from Lux Radio Theater. The rest of the extras files contain audio and video. Plex plays all of these files properly. However, I just added quotation marks around The Awful Truth in the file named "inside The Awful Truth-featurette.mkv. By the way, “inside The Awful Truth” (with lower-case i) is the name of that video.

“Normally if I am ‘upgrading’ an item I will just name it the same and replace the item by copying right on top of it - then analyzing when done (just to make sure). IF I’m upgrading a Movie that has Extras, the original version is REMOVED from the server, the trash is emptied and the bundles are cleaned before adding it’s upgrade and Extras back to the server.”

On one occasion, when I allowed a Blu-Ray file to overwrite a DVD file, Plex continued to show the metadata as 480i instead of 1080p. These days, I either give the DVD movie file a dummy name before ripping the Blu-Ray disk or I first move the DVD movie file to a different part of my NAS and scan the Plex files before ripping.

General Comments:

I understand that Plex has rules, and I’m trying to learn those rules. But by analogy, If I’m driving my car and turning the steering wheel to the right, I expect my car to turn to the right. If the car turns the left on some occasion when I’m turning the steering right, I will want to know why that happened. Since updating Plex the other day, I’m getting inconsistent results. Let me explain.

The DVD version of The Apartment does not have any extras. I copied the folder containing the DVD version of the movie to a remote part of my NAS, deleted that folder from the Media Folder, and scanned the Plex files before ripping the Blu-Ray disk. The thumbnails appeared in Plex and played until I renamed several of the extras files. After reading your most recent comment, I copied the folder containing the Blu-Ray version of The Apartment and the extras files to a remote area of the NAS, deleted that folder from the Media Folder, scanned the Plex files, performed the clean bundles operation, scanned the Plex files again, created a new folder for The Apartment in the Media Folder, copied all the video files from the remote location, and scanned the Plex files again. The thumbnails still do not appear when I click on The Apartment in Plex.

To test the system two different ways, I first copied one of the extras files from The Apartment folder to The Asphalt Jungle folder, which contains a DVD version of the movie. The extras file from The Apartment appeared as a thumbnail when I clicked on The Asphalt Jungle and it played properly. I then copied an extras file from a DVD folder (not The Asphalt Jungle) to The Apartment folder. When I clicked on The Apartment, the thumbnail associated with the copied extras file did not appear.

In summary, the extras files from The Apartment appear as thumbnails when I transfer the extras files to other movie folders, but thumbnails do not appear under The Apartment when I transfer them into the folder for The Apartment. For some reason, thumbnails will not appear under The Apartment.

On the day that I ripped the Blu-Ray for The Apartment, I also ripped Blu-Rays for two movies that were virgins in my movie collection (that is, I never had a DVD for either of these movies). The first movie has only one extras video, which appeared under the movie’s name and plays properly. The second movie (Into the Woods) has several extras videos, which initially appeared in Plex as thumbnails but disappeared as I was renaming the extras files. When I copied these extras files to a different movie’s folder, thumbnails appeared under that movie’s name and they played properly. As before, I copied an extras file from another movie’s folder, but a thumbnail didn’t appear under this new movie’s name. In other words, this is the same problem I experienced with The Apartment, but without a pre-existing DVD file.

On the day that I ripped the Blu-Ray for The Apartment, I also ripped a Blu-Ray disk as a replacement for DVD that has a lot of extras files. The Blu-Ray disk has only one extras file that was not included with the DVD version of this movie. Before ripping the Blu-Ray disk, I gave a dummy name to the file containing the DVD version of the movie. When I clicked on the movie’s name, all the thumbnails from the DVD appeared in Plex, and all the thumbnails from the Blu-Ray appeared in Plex. Equally important, all the thumbnails played properly even after I renamed that new extras file. So, unlike the case of The Apartment, Plex handled this movie as expected.

In summary, I don’t see a pattern that explains why thumbnails for The Apartment and Into the Woods will appear in Plex and play properly when I copy their extras files to another movie’s folder (e.g., The Awful Truth; The Asphalt Jungle), but no thumbnails will appear when I copy another movie’s extras files to the folder of The Apartment or Into the Woods. Of course, I don’t understand how Plex works. I’m just happy that it works most of the time.

Yea, and that means:
Plex Dance - try again.

Experience teaches the maiden voyage with Extras needs to be free of incident. Once the bundle is borked, it’s over.

Thanks, trumpy81. I just changed both files. The name of the file with Hope Holiday actually includes “Interview” but there’s no point confusing Plex.

I thought a Retort was a Pastry.

As explained in my last post, I had the same bad outcome regardless of whether the Blu-Ray replaced a DVD or was totally new to my system. Moreover, I had inconsistent outcomes when the Blu-Ray replaced a DVD. In any event, I deleted the files for The Apartment and re-ripped the disk. This time, the thumbnails appeared in Plex even after I renamed the extras files. Hopefully, they will remain in the system. Now, I’m re-ripping Into the Woods and hoping for the same good outcome.
