Local files for Trailers and Extras being counted as Movie duplicates/parts using Extras Subdirectory method

Server Version#: 1.20.2.3402
Player Version#: 4.34.4

Regarding Local Files for Trailers and Extras

Using the subdirectory method of adding extras as documented Plex sees those extras as Movie duplicates/parts - they are counted in the little blue box.

Unless I also add -interview, -behindthescenes, etc. to the filename as well.

This does not work:

/Movies
   /Avatar (2009)
      Avatar (2009).mkv
      /Behind The Scenes
         Performance Capture.mkv
      /Deleted Scenes
         Bar Fight.mp4
         Lost Sister.mkv
      /Interviews
         Sigourney Weaver.mp4
         Stephen Lang.mp4
      /Scenes
         Arrival.mp4
      /Trailers
          Teaser Trailer.mp4
          Theatrical Trailer #1.mp4
          Theatrical Trailer #2.mp4

This prevents that issue but will show -Extra_Type after the extra name inside Plex, not ideal.

/Movies
   /Avatar (2009)
      Avatar (2009).mkv
      /Behind The Scenes
         Performance Capture-behindthescenes.mkv
      /Deleted Scenes
         Bar Fight-deleted.mp4
         Lost Sister-deleted.mkv
      /Interviews
         Sigourney Weaver-interview.mp4
         Stephen Lang-interview.mp4
      /Scenes
         Arrival-scene.mp4
      /Trailers
          Teaser Trailer-trailer.mp4
          Theatrical Trailer #1-trailer.mp4
          Theatrical Trailer #2-trailer.mp4

Works like a charm for me – even with recently added content.

How exactly did you structure those files of yours?
It almost sounds as if you had e.g. linked the movie folders directly to your library or otherwise some missing/extra folder layers that give Plex the hiccups.

Did you look over the documentation?

According to it, If a file is inside a folder there is no need to append -Extra_Type

I am saying if I don’t do that those files are seen as duplicates.

I’ve been reading it and know how it’s working – that’s how my files are organized.
I was asking about yours because you didn’t share your actual file names / structures but mostly pasted the example from the support articles. It appears you got something mixed up along the way.

My point in particular is that e.g. this will work:

Movies <- the folder linked to my movie library
  Megamind (2010)
    Megamind (2010).mkv
    Deleted Scenes
      Toothbrush Scene.mkv
    Shorts
Megamind - The Button of Doom.mkv

while this will not work

Movies
Megamind (2010) <- folder linked to my movie library
    Megamind (2010).mkv
    Deleted Scenes
      Toothbrush Scene.mkv
    Shorts
Megamind - The Button of Doom.mkv

It’s also not going to work if you get your names wrong

Movies <- folder linked to my movie library
  Megamind (2010)
    Some other movie name (2017).mkv
    Deleted Scenes
      Toothbrush Scene.mkv
    Shorts
Megamind - The Button of Doom.mkv

The same hiccup can happen if you’re dealing with mp4/m4v files that have embedded metadata that’ll mismatch the files.

Thanks. My structure is exactly as shared in my post. It was far easier to copy, paste and edit that as an example than to construct one from scratch.

I trust you and figured there was a library issue. What I just did was remove the offending movie folder and its contents, rescanned the library, then re-added the folder and refreshed its metadata. This seems to have straightened things out. I am thinking there was stale information for that movie that was conflicting with my adding new subfolders and renaming files.

It’s behaving. Do you see any advantage to having them labeled with the -Extra_Type even though it is not required according to the documentation?
Since it’s now not appearing in Plex I don’t really care one way or the other but want to settle on a standard for my library.

You just need one of those to organize your extras: dedicated folders or the suffix. You can even mix them.
Personally I prefer the dedicated folders. This feels a bit cleaner and easier to expand.

I am going to revisit this because I am seeing the same behavior today (after I renamed some movie files that were erroneously named the same as the movie file (with an index number) and not in an extras subfolder).

To show “evidence” of what I am speaking, and document it.

The screenshots are large but they show what Plex is doing. It seems reluctant to let go of the idea that Extras can also be Parts.

To fix the issue I just move the folder to the Trash, wait for Plex to see the change, then add the folder back.

EDIT:
The issue can be replicated when I lock any of the extras or their containing folder in Finder. I had been doing that because I don’t want FileBot to rename them in the future. This is definitely part of the problem - reproducible.

Did you perform a Plex Dance after fixing the file names?
It looks like Plex had one of the extras still cached as an alternate version of the movie itself.

I just delete the entire folder from the hard drive, then put it back. That fixes this issue. I have Plex set to watch for changes on the HD which works very well.
