As far as I am aware yes we comply with that. Folks in the US will need to re-confirm their watch history sharing choice every couple years. But I’m not a lawyer so can’t get into detailed conversation about it.
After doing a quick scan through this thread I did not see this question asked so I’ll apologise now in case I missed it.
Is my assumption correct that once I have Discover disabled fully at my account level that when this new set of social features comes out of beta that I’ll have nothing extra to do to disable them for my account ?
@anon5074910 there are two new notifications. my messages and my friends activity . And a new discover optout for the activity feed for individual items on details pages.
Your profile is still viewable ( currently without the tabs at the top) by clicking on your avatar in user menu. Your history from stuff on server will only be there if you enabled syncing watch history as a way for a user to see what they have synced but there is no requirement to share those with others and will still be private.
If you don’t go out of your way to access it then you should not see anything related to the new features after disabling those new opt-outs
Thanks, I’ve not signed up for the beta as its not something I’ll want so I guess I’ll need to take note and disable them once it comes out of beta.
Do not like the Your profile is still viewable comment so will want some more detail on that, I’ll go and see if I can find more info on it from that doc. I do hope some random person cannot just view my profile ? I do have Sync Your Watch State and Ratings disabled as again, not something I want myself.
I only meant you can go to yoru profile and you can see your watch history and such if you had syncing watchign state and ratings enabled because it is yours. This does not mean other folks can see that stuff as it is all private by default. and it definitely would not be random people with Plex accounts you are not friends with. If you leave it on private and don’t add other details like location, your friends will only be able to see what they see now which is your username, full name, avatar just like when clicking on someone in your profile you already gave access to your server.
Okay, thank you.
One feature I would love to see is the ability to continue those interactive discussions. You can share commentary to multiple friends but responses are limited to the person who initiated only rather than the entire group.

X sends msg to ABC, either A Or B Or C should comment to all or any other combination as opposed to A to X, B to X or C to X only…
We are still not getting emails or push notifications for activities, is this still a limitation?
Correct. Those have not been turned on yet.
Just noticed some inconsistency in how the “activity by” button and history is displayed in personal media. What is supposed to be the behavior of this button? Noticed it appears to show all users to have consumed that media, but doesn’t show consistently. At series level seems to show activity once a friend has completely viewed at least an episode… Again. Not consistent in this behavior.
@FazFaz by going into the category or subcategory you want to make that topic in and hit the new topic button at the top of the page.
@blackzwe the activity feeds display the info we have from the syncing watch state feature. Watch state from a server is only synced if something has been completed.
Really like this feature and think it has a lot of promise. A few thoughts after a few days with it:
- The activity tiles (using the PC app for context). are not the most visually impressive. I tend to prefer the Trakt approach of putting the info on top of the item background graphic.
- It would be cool to have a “recommend” activity where a user recommends a show/episode/move/artist/song and that recommendation shows up on the activity feed.
- How does the relationship of server users friends activity and library access interact? I’d rather a server user who doesn’t have access to a given library didn’t see activity from a library they don’t have access to. But on the otherhand, since activity can come from other servers or Plex services, maybe this is tricky.
- Most users on my server haven’t bothered to complete their “name” field in their profile. Might be useful to prompt them to do this after this feature is live.
Looking forward to seeing where this goes.
Remember, a “[user] watched [title]” activity event could come from watching something on our Movies & Shows, manually marking the item through Discover/Universal Details, or through watching from a Plex Media Server. The events aren’t tied to servers or libraries, so if I see that a friend/family member “watched” something, I (intentionally) can’t know how/where that actually occurred.
Thanks @BigWheel, some screenshots, the following user isn’t Luchie and they have sync enabled. You’ll notice the shows are completely played, but the activity button is showing activity of admin only…

If I had to guess, activity is only taking into account any activity after enrolling and nothing historical…
So that user does not still have their watch history set to private? So their activity does show for other new watched things or just not whole series/tvshows?
No. See below. An episode watched after enabling enroll. Shows all users activity…
The inconsistency is at series level.
what does this mean? previously watched movies show activity fine?
Ok. I see thanks
Has anybody got a cheat sheet about how to use this? I enrolled in this beta program but I don’t see where and how I can get my users to engage. It’s hard to get them to engage in the first place.
- Where do I start?
- What do I do?
- Do I have to enroll my users?
- Does it automatically start showing up on my users Plex apps be they on the TV or a laptop/whatever?
- Any videos or web pages showing step by step instructions?
- Enroll/join from the link in the first post
- yes you need to enroll friends at the same url after you join yourself. After you do so your friends will both get an email and get a prompt if using a supported app to choose to make their activity viewable by friends.
- It only shows in the apps listed in the support docs linked in first post
