Even if you are logged in, the links at watch.plex.tv don’t show that a title is available on a server you are connected to.
When you then add a movie to your Watchlist from a watch.plex.tv link, it opens a new tab, forces you to login again, and then simply takes you to your home page.
The link between watch.plex.tv and app.plex.tv seems too disconnected.
I agree the new feature is pretty cool, and I’ll enjoy using once my Friends get engaged. For those who are having trouble getting their friends to participate, or are concerned with security, here’s something you can try. For testing, I’ve created several free email accounts, and several free PLEX accounts, one for each email. I’ve been watching, watchlisting and rating both Movies and TV Shows from multiple browser…e.g. Chrome, Firefox and Safari…each one using a different email login. This give me realtime activity so I don’t have to wait on friends.
Overall content restrictions per account: There doesn’t seem to be any way to restrict a child’s Plex account to only display family-friendly content on the Discover page.
Name field for friends: It would be nice to see first names or nicknames of friends in addition to their usernames, and not just those connected via our Home setup.
Activity feed needs a more concise, filterable display: The cards in the feed are so large, I have to scroll a LOT to find what I’m looking for. Adding some filtering/sorting capabilities (e.g. by type of activity, user(s), date range) would be a huge help here, as well as a dedicated space for my own activity.
Better management of watchlist content: It would be helpful to add this capability to bulk-actions. I would like to select multiple items and add to/remove from watchlist.
Allow me to set a watched date when marking media as watched: Generally if I’m pressing this button, it’s because I watched the item in the past, not just now. There’s also plenty of content that was watched on or near its release date, so this option would be very handy.
Integrate “watch from these locations” into individual media pages: Much like the new Editions view on the media page, I’d like to know if the content I’m viewing is available elsewhere, or in another format, without having to navigate to the Discover page for that item.
Allow me to recommend or review items: This would be cool as a list on the main Discover page — recommended by friends or highly rated. It would also be great to see friends’ ratings on individual items, without having to navigate to another page.
Lots of good comments and feedback from folks in this thread. A few others that I have:
(1) Allow a default “Tab” to be set for the Discover page, or general reordering. I.e., I would much rather have the “Activity” page be default, as opposed to the standard “Trending” page (particularly as it shows ups on the homescreen, when pinned).
(2) Allow as server owner to hide all activity from specific users.
(3) Improved UI of Activity cards and use of real estate.
Definitely should not need to sign in again. Can you provide some more details?
@Pterisaur Thank you for your feedback. Just a couple things:
Managed users do not have access to the Discover page. We are looking to improve our parental controls. I assume you are referring to a child who has a Plex account (signed up with an email address), is that correct?
Those users would need to input those fields on their account.
As for the rest of the feedback, sounds good to me . Thanks again!
Are push notifications still off? I started getting the daily summaries today. Very limiting in terms of engagement without the push notifications, my current circle of Plexians are not really engaged unless I send the same in our Plex text thread.
It seems only viewed media that is in a library using the latest Plex Agents is being logged under Activity. This applies to all of my users, as well as myself. Is this the expected behavior?
yes. the GUIDs from the new agents match the GUID for items at watch.plex.tv which is why we can do this without knowing what is on your server as things could be marked as watched manually even if you don’t have it on your server.
This is a great update and I really hope it continues to be improved upon as time goes on.
One slight disappointment is that this seems to put an end to any hope of official Trakt/Letterboxd support. While it’s great to finally be able to have these social features within my Plex circle… there’s a lot of us that have a wider circle of people we’d like this to work with beyond just those we share Plex with.
Another is that it really sucks the years of watch history that is in Plex and many of us also have on sites like Letterboxd/Trakt that is lost. It’s my understanding that when Plex sync only syncs one play on initial sync. (While sync is a separate feature, it ties into this one)
Initial Suggestions:
Trending Page:
Related to the above I’d like to see these social features expanded to the MediaVerse website (which I guess is watch.plex.tv now). Allowing Plex users that don’t necessarily share Plex content to be friends and share reviews.
Though not exactly part of this, I really hope we’ll be able to edit what Discover rows show up on our home pages when Discover is pinned to the sidebar.
We should be able to edit the rows on Discover’s Trending page. I don’t need “New for Family” for my partner and I, we should be able to pick which (if any) of our streaming services we’d like to see trending rows for, if popular in genre rows are going to show up they should be much more dynamic (I’m now on day three of seeing “Popular in Reality”.
Trending Trailers should be more dynamic (seeing the same ones constantly)… perhaps shortening the defined period that is considered, where is the trending data coming from… there’s some very odd items there (reality shows, really bad animated movies)
I hope a row is added that shows what’s Trending amongst everyone using Plex… and not just the items on Plex’s streaming service. This should be doable now given the precautions taken for privacy.
Trending Amongst Friends is the next obvious row to add, given the social aspects now added
Activity Page:
Can we get filters for the different types of activities… watched, rated, reported issue, etc.
Could we get different verbiage for when something is marked as watched versus when an item is played (or would this be an indication of source of playback?)… When first sharing a server users often will go through and mark a whole bunch of things as watched. It’d also nice to be able to filter that type of thing out of the feed.
Reporting Issues:
Can server admins define “quick replies” for common types of issues
It’d be great if this was, for example, in the pull down menu within the Plex Apple TV app during media playback. Would make it easier for non-tech family/friends to report issues immediately after encountering it.
Managed Users:
I’d hope this is going to come to managed users
I also hope Plex looks into. having a migration path for managed users to become full Plex users. Plex has been around long enough that kids who had managed user accounts created by their parents are becoming old enough to have their own accounts. There should be a may to migrate watch states to a full-fledged account.
Ratings Page:
In addition to the current combined list, there should be a way to filter movies or tv.
Other:
I hope this is going to come to TV devices, otherwise adoption will be minimal amongst my family and friends as they rarely use Plex on their phones and never via the website.
I also really hope the sharing and rating features make it to the TV apps, for the same reason
I’d really like the ability to set a separate icon for my server than the one for my profile given the expanded social features. Icon that shows up under “where to watch” doesn’t really need to be the same as the icon for my profile.
I’d love for more of these pages to respect local artwork… too much of it just defaults to whatever image Plex is using on mediaverse.
Questions:
Is there a section within Plex/Web or even the mobile apps that we can see a list of reported issues… only place I’m seeing it is in the Activity page. But I might’ve missed it.
currently the only other place is the activity for the particular item but easier ways to surface reports and someway to mark them as resolved is of the many things feedback has been given on and we want to do.
Ditto on this suggestion. Especially if a new user starts going through stuff they’ve watched before joining Plex and rating it, that activity page is going to need help staying uncluttered.
Another one I’d like to see is mini-reviews. Perhaps comments tied to ratings with a character limit and spoiler tag. These could then populate the area on item detail pages alongside RT reviews, if the spoiler tag is selected the review doesn’t show until after the item is marked as watched.
And the ability to block specific friends’ reviews from showing in your activity feed and item detail screen… thinking of situations where you have a friend who constantly forgets to enable the spoiler tag, uses bad language, has awful reviews :P.
I understand that each user can unsubscribe from those emails, but in general email is insecure, so I’m concerned about this watch history being recorded and broadcast through that medium. Push notifications through the app with a daily or weekly digest would be fine, but I’m worried about email…
