Discussion of Multiple Editions

@Soluna I am confused by your comment? What is the issue? There aren’t any major changes to Editions between 1.28 and 1.29 that I’m aware of.

Hello @anon18523487 and thx for reply.

I double checked all the last Backups of PLEX, so it was Version 1.27.1.5916 when i assigned all the Movies “Edition” fields.
I added the “Edition” Tag in some 100 Files and not one single Movie showed up as “New Added”.

Upgraded directly from 1.27.1 to 1.28.2 but i can’t comprehend for sure, if this issue already started there and not first in 1.29.

For sure, 1.27.1.5916 worked absolutly fine and 1.29.x doesn’t.

Wanna try to explain the Issue again with an new created example

1.27.1.5916
PLEX – Aquaman 2018 – Added 3 Years ago / Watched

  • Aquaman.2018.MULTI.COMPLETE.BLURAY.mkv – (Added 3 Years ago)
    – Now i got an “Extended Edition” of this Movie.
    – Gave the new File an Edition Tag and moved it also into the Movie Folder.
    – Both Files are now in the Folder

  • Aquaman.2018__{edition-EXTENDED}__MULTI.COMPLETE.BLURAY.mkv – (Added Now)
    – Rescan Media, which will gave me a Duplicate under Aquaman 2018
    – Delete old Version Aquaman.2018.MULTI.COMPLETE.BLURAY.mkv
    – Rescan Media

PLEX – Aquaman 2018 – EXTENDED – Added 3 Years ago / Watched

1.29 (Maybe also 1.28)
PLEX – Aquaman 2018 – Added 3 Years ago / Watched

  • Aquaman.2018.MULTI.COMPLETE.BLURAY.mkv – (Added 3 Years ago)
    – Now i got an “Extended Edition” of this Movie.
    – Gave the new File an Edition Tag and moved it also into the Movie Folder.
    – Both Files are now in the Folder

  • Aquaman.2018__{edition-EXTENDED}__MULTI.COMPLETE.BLURAY.mkv – (Added Now)
    – Rescan Media, which will gave me a new added Movie Aquaman 2018 – EXTENDED
    – Delete old Version Aquaman.2018.MULTI.COMPLETE.BLURAY.mkv
    – Rescan Media

PLEX – Aquaman 2018 – EXTENDED – Added Just Now / Unwatched

Also the same case, if you wanna replace an Edition like “DC” with an “EXTENDED”
For a short example

1.27.1.5916 – PLEX – Aquaman 2018 – DC – Added 3 Years ago / Watched

  • Aquaman.2018__{edition-DC}__MULTI.COMPLETE.BLURAY.mkv – (Added 3 Years ago)
    – Same procedure as above
  • Aquaman.2018__{edition-EXTENDED}__MULTI.COMPLETE.BLURAY.mkv – (Added Now)

1.27.1.5916 – PLEX – Aquaman 2018 – EXTENDED – Added 3 Years ago / Watched
1.29 (1.28) – PLEX – Aquaman 2018 – EXTENDED – Added Just Now / Unwatched

Ok. Yes, there was a change in 1.28.1. Prior to that, all Editions used the same watched status. With 1.28.1, this was changed. The expected behavior is mentioned in our support article. https://support.plex.tv/articles/multiple-editions/

Dear @MovieFan.Plex … that’s not limited to editions, is it?

Does that mean that if I have a movie called “My favorite movie (2099) German.xyz” (xyz being a movie file extension) and I replace that with the same movie but renamed in any way (since … German.xyz) is no longer correct, I’ll loose the watched status, the cover and any other metadata curation I did?

Please ignore for a moment that the file name addition “… German…” is not completely following your rules but there’s a life outside of Plex and maybe you can see a reason for me making sure that I want this movie to be marked as “German language only” if I plan to mux the original language once I can lay my hands on it.

What was the reason behind that change of basic behaviour?
And how can it be avoided?
If I start to rename my files accordingly, I would loose metadata and watch status…

Yes, this is specific to Editions.

What was the reason behind that change of basic behaviour?
And how can it be avoided?

When Editions was first released, the status was always carried over. This didn’t fit the purpose of Editions, which was to allow tracking progress separately. If you add a new file, this should be different than what you already have and should be treated as something new, so it was decided not to copy the progress from the existing content.

For those that did want to keep the old progress, that can be done by changing the edition info through the UI. If you replace the file, now that the Edition is tracked, the progress will carry over to the new file.

There is no way to go back to the old behavior of having all editions use the same progress.

Only problem here is, after you setup once the Edition Field over the UI, you won’t be able to reuse it over the {edition-} command again. In my opinion an unclean solution at all.
Even if you unlock the field, it won’t be filled up automatically.

Workaround i found:
Aquaman.2018.MULTI.COMPLETE.BLURAY.mkv
– You wanna replace it with an EXTENDED Edition

– Rename the existing File by adding {edition-EXTENDED} and Rescan
– Add the new File, which have to be the “Edition” Field identically named and Rescan
– Delete the old File and Rescan

So you should be able to replace an Edition without loosing Watched, Added, or Playlist information.

Aquaman.2018__{edition-DC}__MULTI.COMPLETE.BLURAY.mkv
– If you wanna replace a DC with an EXTENDED Edition

– Rename the existing {edition-DC} Field into the new {edition-EXTENDED} field and Rescan
– Add the new File, which have to be the “Edition” Field identically named and Rescan
– Delete the old File and Rescan

You also should be able to replace an Edition without loosing Watched, Added, or Playlist information.

@MovieFan.Plex … Maybe it would be helpfully and appreciated when you add this Workaround into the Support Article.

I literally squealed when I saw this post. Thank you so much devs! You made my day, haha

What do you mean by reuse?

Workaround i found:

If you want to keep the status, just follow the notes.

1 - edit the edition info in the UI
2 - replace the file with the new “{edition-xxx}” tag using the same name you did in the UI in step 1

That’s it. Step 1 transfers the watched status to the edition. Step 2, no changes happen since you’re replacing an edition with an edition.

Once you edit the “Edition” Field in the UI, its like a kind of useless because PLEX won’t recognise anymore if you wanna do a change in the file name, even if you unlock the “Edition” Field. So, sooner or later you will geht some discrepancy.

In this case, the solution should be to replace an Edition and keep the status just over the Filename which is still possible with the workaround i descripted upstairs, even if its a kind of unwieldy.

Of course, your workaround will work almost fine, but its always the point which everyone should ask yourself, do i wanna do a clean and reliable solution or just a quick one which will probably end um in some discrepancy over years.

For someone who never want replace or edit an Edition, it will work. But when you are gonna go to keep your DB up to date and for exampe replace an “EXTENDED” with an “EXTENDED REMASTERED” or a “DC”, then the excellent and complex programming of this field really comes into its own.

For my understanding, the sence of the Edition Field with the automativ “GET” availability should be to just rename the File Name and never rename it in the UI. Otherwise PLEX would perform like before where you put the Edition Name into the Age field or whereever.
You would have to immediately prove every Movie which you replace, but the real use will show you more and more inconsistency over years because there will always get missed the one or the other.

So with the Edition Field over the Filename you won’t produce unnessesary discrepancy, which would be a perfect use.

Dear @anon18523487 I don’t know if someone else have issues. Maybe you can help? I tried to have editions feature but to no avail. I’ve renamed them according to the naming convention but still no avail. When re-scanned the Plex server just recognized them as separated versions, not editions. Tried to split them (and manually add edition tags) however they would not recognize multiple editions

Tried everything - delete the files, re-copy to server. Rename them and re-scan, etc. etc. Doesn’t seem anyone in the forum have the same issues as I do.

Kinda desperate here - I want to have this feature so much!

Spec:

Server: Synology NAS DS1520+ DSM 7.1.1.-42962
Plex server version: PlexMediaServer-1.29.1.6316-f4cdfea9c-x86_64_DSM7.spk
Plex Pass lifetime membership

Appreciate if you can assist me here? - Thank you!

Is your library configured to use the current-generation Plex Movie agent (not Plex Movie (legacy) or other legacy agents)?

hi @tom80H - not the current Gen Plex Movie agent - still using the legacy Movie Database (TMDB / TVDB)

Plex kept asking to upgrade but i’m worried about unmatched movies

this is why the editions feature doesn’t work?

Using editions depends on using the current-generation agent.

@tom80H just now upgrade to the current-gen agent. Refresh metadata and re-scan files. Editions still doesn’t work :face_exhaling:

Can you provide the logs from the last scan you did along with 1 movie that you’ve added the edition info to so I can check what’s going on?

Does this thread continue somewhere else or did it just abruptly stop in October?

Apparently it stopped abruptly.

Editions are no good to me until they can be combined under a single entry in the database.

Despite sone hints in this thread that they would consider improvements to the as-implemented functionality, Plex have done their usual “cut and run” from this thread now that they have released a half-baked, half-thought through implentation of what has been requested for years.

No doubt some new, pointless aspect of streaming D-grade films and TV has caught their attention, thus abandoning the core product of Plex (streaming local media, that’s local media people, local, L-O-C-A-L) for which many users, including me, paid a Lifetime Subscription for only to see long standing feature requests and bugs relating to LOCAL streaming ignored.

Would it be possible to make the Multiple Editions Tag searchable with the search-field?

Also the Multiple Editions Tag could be clickable, so it can show all Movies with the same Tag/Edition.

I use this feature to tag my 3D Movies as a seprate Edition (using {edition-3D}).
→ Therefore beeing able to search for “3D” showing all Movies with the tag {edition-3D} would be really cool. Curently this is not working.

You can filter by Edition

Yes, that I do already know, but aditionally It would be nice if the search field would also offer resusts when searching for an Edition (and if the Editions where chlickable in a movie page).
