Discussion of Multiple Editions

Is there an ETA for multiple editions of an episode. It’s in the docs but simply not working for. Loosely connected to that topic, when will episode and season level local media assets be available as documented?

I would LOVE if the multiple editions feature was available for TV shows too…

The Multiple Editions support article mentions episodes when summarizing Multiple Versions (=different quality version of the same video) in comparison to editions.

Plex have commented they’re looking into expanding editions to tv-based content but there’s no confirmation nor does Plex comment on their roadmap or provide ETAs for future features.

How about addressing the issues raised in this thread within days of the feature being released but then subsequently ignored by Plex?

The main one be the ability to consolidate multiple editions under one entry in the database/poster wall.

This is an area that I think Emby does it better. They have a dropdown where you can select the edition/version you want.

I think Plex is making the argument unnecessarily complicated by making a distinction between editions and versions. I’m not sure the community cares about it as much as they do. Sometimes it feels like the argument is more important to them than the solution.

I don’t like the dropdown idea.
Because you’ll have to click on the dropdown before you’ll even know what editions are available.

I don’t think it has to be an either/or solution. We’ve always had the ability to separate movies if we wanted to, however manual that workaround may have been.

If they offered the dropdown option, you wouldn’t have to use it.

Bring back the little blue number in the corner of the poster and you’d know before you clicked on it that there are choices to be made. I miss that number.

I really hate that implementation. I’m glad Plex got rid of that (to be clear, the need to select the version by my own).

Whoo, the difference is very important.

Plex will choose the best version automatically, but of course could not choose the best edition.

An edition usually has a different length and/or different age rating. You cannot collapse these under the same movie entry.

Totally not important to me. I don’t really have files of varying quality.

Again, totally off my radar for care. I’d rather collapse all versions/editions/whatever under one. Personal preference.

I get that some people do care about this. I really don’t.

I’m still hoping they are going to implement a feature where you can customize it. They way it is implemented right now I have no use for it.

I agree, 100%. Users need choice not one, half-baked idea forced on them that doesn’t suit the majority of users who have given feedback in this thread.

I think two improvements would help the feature immensely.

  1. Move or copy the edition picker up above the cast hub and within the initial view so people can see all available editions without having to navigate off the play button. Make it text only to reduce space and keep the existing poster version further down the page for the expanded details.

New compact picker in main view:

The current picker further down the page with more details:

  1. Have an option to combine editions into a single library entry. Make it optional similar to merge and split so if people want separate metadata they can do it.

A combined entry would just share all the same metadata. Ultimately it would be nice if a combined view could have different metadata, and when you hovered on a different edition button the details changed on the fly, but I imagine it would require a major overhaul of the editing system to be able to edit a combined view.

This is what I thought it was going to be. Plex, make it happen!

When are we going to see a new implementation of this feature that meets the specifications of paying customers?

First major request for the cuts (editions) feature I can find was in 2012 with 1522 votes. It was implemented in 2022, so I’m betting 2032 for proper implementation reworking based on the current timeline trajectory haha.

@Plex, come on, please can you for once take notice of the feedback provided by your paying users, yes, that is your customers who have paid you money for your primary product which is streaming local media (not d-grade live tv dross) and want the issues with the current half-baked implementation of Multiple Editions fixed.

Ignoring your customers is not good for business!

This should be a setting in the web interface, and not coupled with folder structure.

Bumping this because we are coming up on 3 months since the last reply, and it’s ridiculous that the implementation is still crap.

Almost a year since this had been implemented. Nothing happened.

And yet the release notes for almost every version of Plex since contain updates for their D-grade Live TV service and their D-Grade Streaming Library. Neither of these features factored into my decision to pay for a Lifetime Plex Pass, it was the core feature of Plex which is to stream my personal library of media.

Plex, when are you going to remember why you exist and get back to focusing on the issues that impact your core, paying users?
