Disgruntled PlexPass Lifetime member with Shield

Why are posts like these being completely ignored?

I have tweeted @plex twice over the past couple weeks, including a DM, about the issue and none have received any response or acknowledgement. Meanwhile @plex is promoting their partnership with the Shield all the time. I bought this device specifically because of this relationship, and now my device is basically a brick.

I’ve been using Plex since before @elan even named it Plex, and I have never had any issue even remotely like this. As a dev myself, I do not hold it against the Plex team for such an issue to have cropped up, but someone needs to admit that the bug even exists and at least guide us on whether an update is going to fix it.

There’s a thread on the Shield forum where someone suggested that the 7.0 upgrade may resolve it, but that seems like pure speculation unless confirmed by the Plex team. At this point, I am concerned that my Shield might never successfully update to 7.0 since it can’t stay on for more than 15 minutes without its infinite reboot cycle.

Sorry, but I had not seen those threads. What you describe sounds similar or at least related to another thread I have been investigating, https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/264449/15-minute-reboots-after-a-crash-every-15-minutes#latest.

It does seem like the Shield firmware update has helped, but this is not an issue we’ve been able to reproduce so we can’t confirm that it’s a fix.

Just as a point of info my Shield Pro works almost perfectly and never reboots unless I tell it to.

I do not know what makes my Shied so stable as opposed to others but one thing is I almost never use my Shield for anything except for its server function. However when I do it does work well and remains stable.

In general my entire Plex system is quite a bit more stable than I am.

Oh, one more thing: I do not use any Plex DVR or TV functionality at all. That could make a difference.

I had no problem using the Shield for months. I went on vacation and came back on May 30 to see the device was in a reboot loop. It has never stopped. Setting PMS to “disable” of “force stop” does not help, and PMS starts itself every reboot. I just have to unplug it completely because it is useless.

I understand that this can be very hard to reproduce, but there are several of us posting about this. I will provide whatever diagnostics are of benefit.

There should be a sticky in the Shield forum that says “we’ve heard about the issue and are investigating” at a bare minimum.

Also note that there was a Shield firmware update that some users got. There were problems with that update so NVidia stopped it so not everyone got it. You may have gotten this bad update. Check your Shield firmware if you are on 7.0.0 or 7.0.1. 7.0.0 is the bad one.

I am still on Shield 6.3…

I have plugged the brick back in to see if the nvidia guidance to reduce the library size has any impact.

Why is nvidia diagnosing the issue and not the Plex team??

Of course I gave up and did a factory reset the day before the Shield update went public. I am now on Oreo and have not yet restored all my library content, but what is in there is working fine.

I use the SHIELD myself and have never noticed this.

Why is nvidia diagnosing the issue and not the Plex team??

If it’s an issue with the device rebooting, this is not something an app should be able to cause (e.g. kernel panic).
